Party bags or not?

My ds was at a party a few weeks ago where they had no party bags just a piece of cake wrapped in a napkin. I thought this was very sensible as last year I spent alot of money on these and I'm sure they were thrown away a few days later.

DS will be 5 next month and we're thinking of having a party with 25 children. Would it be very stingey not to have party bags? Or has anyone got any cheap ideas?

Depends what yo umean by cheap. Personally I 'd rather buy some of the 'good value' sets of books from The Book People and split those. Each child gets a piece of cake, a decent book and perhaps a couple of fun size mars bars.

I don't see why you should have to have party bags like some that get dished out. If you're having a party for that many children, you are bound to be offering lots of nice goodies and treats and food for them all so there's nothing wrong with then sending them home with a piece of cake and a balloon IMO! The balloon and the cake is the only thing the kids are really that bothered about anyway!

helium balloon and piece of cake
or a book (if you buy from book people) it can work out cheap

or just stick to the cake

On an earlier thread someone suggested whoopee cushions - which I'm sure little boys would adore.

What about a small pot with a bag of soil, and a packet of seeds?

PrimulaVeris · 09/02/2009 12:36

Well, you'll have to cope with 25 little people yelling "But where's my party bag?!"

Whoopie cushion brilliant idea. That, a ballooon and a couple of Haribos from a multipack and the cake should be absolutely fine. The book idea good too (though actually the children prefer sweets and whoopie cushions ... the parents prefer books!)

Just put the cake in a party bag with some sweets (no plastic tat)- they don't care what's in the bag, they just want one!! As for books, the presents are for the birthday child IMO, seems weird to me that they all get a present. Their turn will come.

Ok -So maybe I'll get them party bags. Some great ideas here, thanks!
Just had a look at 'The Book people' website (I like that idea) and looks quite reasonable.

Actually while I'm at it,do any of you know how to make bags by recycling paper?...I saw my niece come back from a party with one before.

make a party hat shape/boat (someone's dad always knows how to fold them!) out of paper and then just turn it upside down, thread ribbon through to make handles and voila - a little bag! Only enough space in them to hold a piece of cake and a party bloweranyway, so that's the budget thing sorted!

Pound shop for multi packs of pencils and rubbers - at least they're useful -add sweets and cake.

Blondeshavemorefun · 09/02/2009 14:18

unfortuanally children expect a party bag - even though i keep saying to my guys that you mustne expect them

too many people buy a lot of crappy, breakable small toys which get thrown in the bin

a bag with a small book, balloon and piece of cake is more than enough

daftpunk · 09/02/2009 14:26

twims..lol, are you joking?

you have to have a party bag, it's tradition.....the more in it the better, doesn't have to be expensive.

beforesunrise · 09/02/2009 14:34

i used to be very anti party bags, but actually i think children expect them and you would be disappointing them enourmously by not having them. doesnt have to be expensive, lots of good ideas here.
