An easy question about reusables and wraps.

I think this is a simple question, but I wanted to check with people who know before shelling out for the wrong thing.

We use Motherease nappies and wraps, a poppered boosting pad thingy and either a fleece or a paper liner (the paper liner goes through the wash really well by the way so I'm not convinced how flushable it can be.)

Ds is a chunky little sausage and the M/L wraps really cut in to his thighs. I want to buy bigger wraps. I'm not in UK so my choices may be limited.

Will any old wrap do?
What should I look out for?
Would it be better to get someone to send me Motherease wraps from UK?
Will the next size up necessarily work?
What do I need to know?

Am very much a beginner in reusables so don't assume I know anything.

I don't think any old wrap will do. There are so many different ones on the market, and it's a question of finding the best one that works for you. I use terry squares on DS, with old fashioned pull-on type plastic pants put on over the nappy. Some people cringe at the idea, but I recently bought some waterproof pants from Boots the chemist, which have lovely soft leg openings that don't cut into DS thighs. They're also cheap as chips, about £2.99 for a pack of 5. It is however important to get the sizing right, and make sure all the nappy is tucked up into the pants, otherwise you get terrible leaks. I don't know where you're living outside the UK, but you could get your friends/family to send some out to you. I have a cousin living in the USA, who sent me some Bummis Whisper pull-on pants, which were good quality, but work out more expensive.

how old is your dc btw? I found that my dds thighs actually got smaller after he started cruising and walking and so we stuck with the Medium/Large size airflow wraps.

he may have just been weird though

ME are widely believed to be the best - I think they are!
I would get just one in a size up to try; if it is no better you will need to research other options.

Good idea to just buy one and see how I go.

And good point about him losing a bit of the pludge when he gets more mobile. He's 9 months old and far fatter than his 2 year old sister . He's just started crawling though and is itching to get cruising so it won't be long.

Popolino (Motherease) and Nature Babies wraps are generally well liked. Nature babies ones have nicer patterns amd are more adjustable than Popolino (Motherease ) ones, but either make is hard to beat TBH.

Incidentally, Popolino are Motherease , but manufactit0red in Europe not Canada, and are consequently a little bit cheaper, and certainly a bit more eco-friendly, as the shipping CO2 emissions are far less! Motherease granted a licence to Popolio several years ago to produce their designs in Europe

Where are you Alice? I'm not in the UK either but even with postage it's much much cheaper to buy them in the UK than here (Holland).

Any old wrap really won't do IMHO. Motherese (Popolino are Motherease too as Quiddich said) are pretty much unbeatable. The poppered version would be best for you as they are much more adjustable.

It's not that you have to use ME wrapw with ME nappies, it's just that they are THE best wraps

I used only ME wraps with my first 2. Loved them. Used both poppered airflow and... the other ones with velcro. The only problem was that, onto my third child I was getting a bit bored of the designs. Shallow, but true!

So I have lots of Nature Babies ones as well now, and I like them just as much as ME. I have 2 Tots Bots ones and can't get on with them at all. However carefully I fit the wrap over the nappy (and I use MEOS exclusively - they've easily lasted 3 children so can't be bettered imo) they wriggle around and always expose some nappy, with inevitable leaking.

For fun I also bought a few Wacky Wraps. They are lovely. Similar design to Nature Babies, but covered in fleece with very groovy appliqued designs/pictures on them. They were lovely last summer with just a t-shirt.

No. 3 is now out of nappies in the day, and I will miss choosing a cool wrap. Oh, to answer your question (!) I didn't notice much difference between the M/L and the L ME wraps, but maybe I'm thick. I know there is a M/L in my stash at the moment, but as all my labels have fallen off through millions of washings, I have no idea which one it is, and it's not obvious to me.

just adding that the thighs do slim once they become more mobile. Could you maybe do the wraps up a little looser? They don't actualy have to fit right in tight to the skin to work, they're more of a stop the wee getting through to the clothes wrap.

AliceTheCamelisnotapig · 11/02/2009 10:38

Thank you all.

Now I need to see if I can find ME or Popolino wraps over here, and if not I'll get someone in UK to send me some.

Is L the biggest size? I have the M/L on the very loosest poppers and they still cut in. I even just leave the legs unpopped for naps now - not ideal really!

I feel much better informed now.

NorktasticNinja · 11/02/2009 18:31

Were are you Alice? Most other countries charge the equivalent of VAT on nappies so it may well be worth your while ordering from the UK, especially with the value of the pound being so low ATM.

ME sizing:

XS 6lb - 12lb (2.7kg - 5.5kg) Covers the same weight range as the small size but with a trimmer cut suitable for a smaller baby*.

Small 6lb - 12lb (2.7kg - 5.5kg)

Medium 10lb - 20lb (4.5kg - 9.1kg)

Medium/Large 20lb - 27lb (9.1kg - 12.3kg) A slimmer cut wrap, but taller in the rise, making it suitable for slimmer babies. However, if cost is an issue you could safely skip this size.

Large from 20lb (for chubbier babies) or 27lb (for slim babies) - 35lb (9.1/12.3kg - 15.9kg)

XL 35lb - 45lb (15.9kg - 20.5kg)

giantkatestacks · 11/02/2009 21:13

oh god - thanks for that info NN - I am using the ones I bought for my ds and have completely forgotten the sizes.

This does mean however that my dd is offically chubby...

mumface · 26/05/2009 11:01

Which nappy cream can I use that won't ruin my nappies. Are they all ok as long as you don't plaster the baby in it?
