Help - 17 month old has blotchy rash on her tummy - what should I do?

She is fine in every other way. Put her to bed about an hour ago and noticed the rash. She sometimes gets a little rash here and there but not as big as this. Haven't tried the meningitis glass thing. Was thinking of waking her in an hour or so and seeing if it had spread? TIA

what does it look like?

Bubble99 · 07/02/2009 23:32

OK. I'm not a doctor but by the time a child gets a rash with meningitis they are very, very ill - which she isn't.

peachface · 07/02/2009 23:32

If at all concerned I would do the glass test and then she can settle back to sleep again if that's ok and you're not unduly concerned. Keep an eye on her and see how she goes. There's always out-of-hours docs around at weekends if it's still there tomorrow and you're concerned. Better to check - and ease your concerns.

Could it be heat rash? Is her room too warm?

Bubble99 · 07/02/2009 23:33

Yes. Do a glass test anyway.

Heat rash common and also children can often get an alarming-looking rash with viral things which is just the skin reactiing to a virus. Does she have a temp? If she doesn't it's probably nothing to be too concerned about - I'm not a doctor either, though, just exploring the options!

agree with bubble. But ditto get checked if concerned. You can just press on skin gently around rash area to see if it blanches - don't need to disturb her by putting cold glass on her tummy whilst she's sleeping.

Quite common for little ones to get all sorts of rashes with viral illnesses. Other things could be heat rash if she's well covered or excema / dry skin

Thanks very much. Have just got her up. Rash on tummy is hardly evident now. Couple of spots on her arms faded in glass test. We were going to check later but you prompted us to check asap so we are now reassured. She seems fine otherwise so we'll just keep an eye on her. She was sleeping on her tummy so had to wake her up but she didn't cry and seems to have gone straight back to sleep.

Thanks again for your advice.

Glad she's ok - and that you can relax now and don't have to worry about it. It is worrying when rashes appear but they're so common. My ds1 gets eczema and is very rashy in clusters round his armpits and chest. Can be down to all sorts of things. Have a good night.
