I've joined the secret slingers club

When I was pregnant with dd I knew I would want to wear her and probably not even bother with a pushchair. Well. That didn't happen. She hated every sling and wrap I tried and I gave up and bought a pram.

When pregnant with ds I did a bit more research. I enlisted the help of my baby wearing friends. I accosted women with interesting slings and wraps and grilled them for advice. I spent another small fortune on various slings and wraps. He hated them all. I gave up and bought a double pushchair.

Ds is 9 months now. A few weeks ago I was trapped in the infernal hell of Ikea with a screaming, overtired ds, and a rancid tempered dd. In utter desparation I threw ds on my back and tied him on with a kanga I had in the pushchair and off we went. He LOVED it! I've done it a few times since and it's working brilliantly! A couple of days ago I was 3/4 of the way around a mamoth supermarket shop when both children went in to meltdown. I only had a single child space in my trolly so I chucked ds on my back and tied him on while standing in the middle of the supermarket ! Then I popped dd in the trolly and finished the shop in peace while ds dozed off on my back!!

This is how I'm doing it.

I can even cary my nearly 3-year-old quite comfortably.

Every time I do it it gets a bit better.

And I am suddenly a member of the Secret Slingers Club. I didn't know it existed! Everywhere I go I am approached by other baby wearing mums or wannabe baby wearers. It's like a secret handshake or something. It's great and I'm SO pleased I finally got there!

I know it wasn't for me but thanks for that video Loopymumsy! I just successfully got DD in a bwcc thanks to that and it was pretty good I think. DD seemed to agree as she wouldn't get down, I had to do the housework with her in it It was so comfy though.

babyphat · 10/02/2009 12:06

thanks loopymumsy, i did it!! was also inspired by this thread to order a babyhawk that i think will be more comfy than my maya wrap MT. just about to unwrap it now and hopefully do some hoovering...should we start a sling addicts anonymous?

ChairmumMiaow · 10/02/2009 12:15

babyphat - my babyhawk changed things for us as now other people will carry DS (rather than just me and DH with the wraps) as its much easier!

this was also useful, i used the 'santa toss' to get her on, which she LOVED. she is 5 months old and seemed fine (pretty hefty, about 20lb and long, but don't see why it wouldn't work with a smaller baby)

FaintlyMacabre · 10/02/2009 12:24

Oooh, can I join in too? My Babyhawk arrived this morning and it is lovely. So now I have a mei tai, Didymos, Ergo and a pouch. Just need a ring sling to complete the set. I have my eye on one of these after trying one at a slingmeet but I don't think I can justify the price, sadly...

babyphat · 10/02/2009 12:24

ooh just tried out the babyhawk, i think i am in love! chairmum, i mainly got it for dp to carry her as he can't quite fathom the wrap. i think he will like it - he got on alright with the ergo but the fit wasn't quite right, i think this will be great. v excited about more man babywearing in our house! (man wearing baby not me wearing man )

FaintlyMacabre · 10/02/2009 12:29

Babyphat-are you me? My DH didn't get on with the Ergo (although I love it) and was really impressed with the BH at the slingmeet.
I thought that most men would prefer the buckle/clip type of carrier but I think he likes the better adjustability(is that a word?) of a mei tai/wrap.

babyphat · 10/02/2009 12:48

faintlymacabre - snap! a lovely mum lent me her ergo to try but i didn't much like it as the shoulder straps slipped off, and it was v unflattering. also the babyhawk is much prettier! dp found it hard to get the right fit too, even though he's much bigger than me. as soon as he steps foot in the door tonight i'm tying the baby onto him!!

FaintlyMacabre · 10/02/2009 13:05

Which pattern did you get? We went for this one. DH approved the pattern though I suspect he'll wear it reversed so it looks a little more 'manly'. It's great to have a pretty sling at last, our Didymos is grey, Ergo is camel and I was getting a bit bored. I should be thankful that DH loves wearing DS as much as I do, even if it does mean we get dull neutral slings!

[http://www.bigmamaslings.co.uk/zen-cart/babyhawk-mei-tai-baby-carrier-customer-return-p-662.html this one]], mainly because it was on offer, i was hankering after the custom ones on the babyhawk website but couldn't really justify it! yours is lovely. i like that they are reversible so i don't have to have a boring one!

babyphat · 10/02/2009 13:43

oops, sorry, this one

Indith · 10/02/2009 20:44

Ooooh you have reminded me that I have some kangas, never got the hang of them with ds but I must get them out again and try dd. I'll stick dd in anything, I have some lovely soft pashminas a friend brought back from China for me, I love tying them into a pouch as they are so soft and they make a lovely deep pouch for dd to snooze in. Plus they are nice and stretchy so easy to swing her round to my back for cooking.

Anyone had any luck trying a back cary with a kanga? Would love to compare notes!
