DS is 9 months and can sit up. Yay!

But he keeps falling backwards.

Obviously this is to be expected, but he's done it twice today. Should I be standing behind him at all times?

Just move the furniture so he can't fall on to it, pop some pillows off the bed around him so he has a soft landing or your quilt.

In the living room today, on laminate flooring.
He's getting around easily and can sit up from lying down, and I don't want to restrict him, but his little head!

the one reason we got carpets when DS turned 6mnths! He's a boy and has constantly got a bruise on his head from a bump or fall.... agree with pillows or a duvet!

The whole house is a death-trap. The living room is laminate, but the kitchen and hallway are tiles. The hot water tank is in his bedroom and all the diy is crap, but it's rented.

have you got a v-shaped cushion? bung that behind him.

Yesterday my dd fell pretty badly on the tiled floor downstairs with the most appalling thud - they all do it.

you can get big rugs in ikea for a tenner - a couple of them - or the duvet suggestion of wastingmyeducation?

wastingmyeducation · 06/02/2009 16:55

Rugs would help. Hmm...

Thanks everyone! Still feel bad. I caught him yesterday, but he was too far away today.

imo he shouldnt really be sitting without anything behind him if hes only just learnt to do it and even if theres something behind him then they just evolve to fall sideways so you end up propping pillows all round.

could you try and get one of those donut style playmats - not sure what they're called? The ones where the baby sits in the middle - you could then cart him and it round the house with you.

psychomum5 · 06/02/2009 17:03

when mine were tiny and still prone to doing that god-awful thud backwards, I used to sit them padded up in my washing basket.

they couldn't thump back, and they were portable while I did my housework

scrooged · 06/02/2009 17:08

Just prop pillows around him. He won't be going anywhere yet so he'll have a nice, soft landing.

wastingmyeducation · 06/02/2009 19:46

Sorry, I should have been more clear, he's been able to sit for a while, but more recently can sit up from lying iyswim. He's generally pretty steady, but does thud if he tries to turn further than he can or gets distracted.
He's crawling backwards at a rate of knots and I don't want to stop him having free run of the floor you see.
I'll get some rugs and strategically hover with cushions, and stick him in his entertainer when I might be distracted.
I like the wash basket idea though psycho, I might give that a go!
Thank you all!

oh i see, then definately a big rug is the way forward...for one thing you dont want all those dents in your floor in rented accommodation
