Highchair help!!!

Cheekster · 04/02/2009 22:35

My DS is 6 months and as of yet I have still not purchased him a highchair. The poor little might has been fed on our lap or in his bouncer chair - which I know is not ideal - BAD MUMMY!

I really need some advice on this as I have a few issues

  1. Lack of space
  2. I have a living room/ diner i.e no space for a table and chairs in the kitchen so need something that matches the decor (dark wood)
  3. Budget of £50 at the max
  4. I need something that will clean easily as Im a bit of a clean freak

I have looked at the TRIPP TRAPP, but way too expensive, I am thinking of either a booster type highchair or those that attach to the table. Does anyone recommend any of these?

Any suggestions?????

Sorry if Ive posted in the wrong thread

I've got a Baby Dan - quite like Tripp Trapp but tons cheaper. Still over £50, though - but maybe Ebay or the sales? It's light wood (not sure if it comes in a dark wood version?) and my DSs both really like it. It cleans up easily, the straps are black (so don't get horribly stained with pureed blueberries - WHY are so many highcghair harnesses white?) The wooden bar that you use in the first few months is handy, too, if they're still a bit slumpy. Cushions are a bit rubbish, though.

I've also got a Phil & Ted's Me Too clip-on highchair - mainly bought it for DS2, as DS1 was still in the Baby Dan, but DS1 now using booster seat or just a normal chair, so the Me Too is just for travelling now. Cost about £30. It's very sturdy and I never worried about it not being able to take the weight etc. Found it v hard to clean, though - woven fabric, so stuff gets sort of mashed in. And tbh, DS2 never really took to it - not sure why, maybe he felt unsupported? Dunno.

HTH!

Get the Ikea one, can't think of the name white plastic, cheap as chips you can get a tray or use it without.

Honestly it's either the ikea on or a tripp trapp wouldn't bother with anything else.

savoycabbage · 04/02/2009 22:52

Agree with Cargirl. Get the IKEA one and then check e-bay for a dark wood tripp trapp over the next year and a half There is bound to be one! Then when your ds grows out of the Ikea one he will be old enough to sit in the tripp trapp without the bar.

(Goes off to sort out world peace)

Ikea antilop

Sawyer64 · 04/02/2009 22:52

Think Tesco do their version of the Tripp Trapp.

SlightlyMadScotland · 04/02/2009 22:55

Ikea Antillop.

It may not fit your Decor, but it will only be for a couple of years and for £15 it is a bargain. Easy to clean, bo food traps..and if you don't like it what's £15?

The only thing - based on your OP that I would point out is that it doens't fold down for storage. It does however easily come to pieces to sling in teh boot to take to the IL's for Sunday lunch.

I think that Ikea also do a Trip trap type chair which may be worth looking into.

CarGirl · 04/02/2009 22:57

I've got a tripp trapp look alike and they're not as good. I've never seen a tripp trapp for less than £50 on ebay they do retain their value!!!

Def get an antilop though they are fab.

naturalblonde · 04/02/2009 23:00

i have this one and it's pretty good.

Cheekster · 04/02/2009 23:00

Thanks for all your advice, I already have purchased an Ikea Antilop, its fab but looks awful in our small living/dining room and doesnt fold down, so is now at PIL's house.

Does anyone use a booster highchair or one that attaches to the table, I really think that would be the best for our pokey house but are they suitable for 6 month olds?

have just seen your dsd is only 6months. well, might be ok when he's older.

SlightlyMadScotland · 04/02/2009 23:06

We had teh Safety first boosters for DTDs as their only high chair, we bought them at about 6m - and they were great as space saving. Not particulatly pretty to look at though and they do tend to harbour food in teh gaps so need cleaning regularly.

Other than that we got on well with them, amd are now using them for DD3 wo is 2 and sits at the table with us.

CarGirl · 04/02/2009 23:07

this one

www.dooyoo.co.uk/kids-equipment/first-years-reclining-booster-seat/

not because it reclines but because it has a high back and it is easy to keep clean with the way it is designed. Had one and loved it.

Mspontipine · 04/02/2009 23:31

I had this here with extra cushion similar to this one.

Easy to take apart to give a good clean, royal blue straps I think I popped in the washing machine. Wahable tray pops on and off. Handy to take to friend's. Need to make sure your chairs are sturdy. Ds was very happy in it.

My ds was eating in his bouncy chair in my bedroom for months!! Waiting for a new kitchen table and had cats. Don't worry!!

dorothybunny · 05/02/2009 14:25

Hi,

I was looking for something along the lines of a Tripp Trapp for my DS and was also put off by the price but came along this yesterday:
www.wilkinsonplus.com/invt/ob00082

It also comes in black and a whitewash finish and is considerably cheaper than the Tripp Trapp and the BabyDan. Am definitely considering ordering myself.

CherryChoc · 05/02/2009 14:45

The Fisher Price Rainforest booster seat looks good, the reviews say suitable for 6 months as well. I'm getting this one and my DS is not 6 months yet.

jocie · 06/02/2009 22:12

Dorothybunny thats fab, have been looking into getting another tripp trapp for ds2 as have looved ds1 one.(ds1 is 3 and still uses his and will be for foreseeable future) but can't really afford one even secondhand(got given 1st one by friend )
have you ordered yours yet? am defo thinking bout getting that one too. Was going to go for the ikea one until ds2 grew out of it and then hopefully ds1 could sit at table but this has made me think that the wilkinson one might be a better option as i can't really see much difference to the tripp trapp one. Has anyone got this wilkinsons one and if so what do you think of it?

seeker · 06/02/2009 22:21

I know tripp trapps are expensive - but my ds is 8 and still sitting on his at the table, and dd is still using hers as a desk char and she's 13!
