How many nappies does a newborn use in a day and night

I just went to my local helath shop to order some newborn size moltex nappies which come in packs of 48. I asked if I could order a box instead of 1 pack and the woman behind the counter questioned me and said "are you sure as they grow very quickly will you get through them all". This confused me so I ended up just ordering 1 pack which is what she recommended but how long would 1 pack of 48 nappies last a newborn. And how long do you think it is before you need the next size up?

As you can tell this will be my first baby!

I changed the boys each time they were fed for about the first month.
if you think they feed about every 2-3 hours in that month that is alot of nappies.
We used washables so I didn't think about it too much - sorry can't be more specific on numbers

It depends on your baby. Useless answer!

I was rubbish at putting nappies on so I seemed to change them all the time because of the leaks. Oh, and that's another thing - different brands seem to be slightly different shapes, I got awful leaks in Huggies & Pampers at first but was better with Tesco's own. (I realise there's less of a choice with more environmentally friendly disposibles).

So, erm, for me about 8 a day I think for the first couple of weeks and then maybe 6 a day. This could be nonsense - it's been 2 years...

Ds was 7lbs 12oz at birth and followed the 50th centile. I think size 1 nappies did him for about 4 weeks. But even babies of similar weights will be different shapes, so hard to compare.

It depends how big your baby is when it's born and how quickly it gains weight .

I know that's not very helpful but it's almost impossible to say!

What is the weight range of the first size?

As a general rule newborns usually need at least 8 nappies a day, often up to 12 if they are bf and poo every feed like mine did. So a pack of 48 will last less than a week .

Ordinary branded/supermarket newborn nappies are 6 - 11lbs (size 1) and 6 - 13lbs (size 2) then 9 - 20lbs (size 3).

I know my 3 were in Size 1's for several weeks, even though they were 8lbs 8oz, 8lbs 4oz and 10lbs 2oz. They didn;t gain weight particularly fast and were relatively long and skinny so fitted into them for longer than a stockier baby would have. IIRC it was probably over 6 weeks before they moved out of the first size.

I don't think ordering a box would be silly, you're unlikely to not use the vast majority of them. I know we kept any leftovers and used them for the next baby .

with dd i went through 10-12 nappies in 24 hours and she grew out of small nappies and went into cotton at 5 weeks..... too pregnant to do the maths but it's definitely more than 48!

with ds he went through slightly less nappies a day (8 maybe?) and he was bigger so fit cotton nappies from about 3 weeks but i'm still fairly certain that's more than 48

NorktasticNinja · 03/02/2009 17:04

I'd say 10 - 12 a day too, DD went into cloth at about 2 weeks but we got through about 3 packs of NatureBabies before that.

Cloth is fantastic, never runs out unless you forget to do the washing!

Thanks everyone. I didn't think I was being mad wanting a box for the first few weeks but the woman in the shop seemed to think I was!

I've got the motherease cloth ones to give a go once they fit her but at first I'll plan to use these dispossable ones.

Based on this will definately go back and order my box as planned, a box only has 3 packs of 48 in it anyway so that might only last about a couple of weeks ish.

If you get sick of / run out of disposable before the Motherease fit, you could always use muslins for a bit. They're really inexpensive and always a really handy thing to have around anyway. The perfect burp cloth, mopper-upper, emergency bib, shoulder protector, nappy booster etc. etc.

my ds was only in size 1 huggies for a week and size 2s for 3 weeks, he was 9lb5oz at birth, but he was huge, fat and really long! (58cm)
he's in tots bots size 1 now with the odd size 3 huggies when i forget to wash! he's 16 weeks and 16lb.

10 a day tiny baby nappies with DS until he was big enough to fit the newborn reusables and then I didn't count as it wasn't costing us money
