OK, just how many wees can a toddler do in an hour?!

I decided to have a go at potty training this week as ds (2.6) has been showing signs (I think...) and we are pretty much stuck at home because of the snow. He's been in nappies (cloth) till now and it has taken me aback just how many tiny wees (as well as a few bigger ones) he has been doing. He has done a couple of bigger wees on the potty but mostly will sit and then when he gets up there's a tiny spot or two of wee in there. Then he'll get up and play and I plan to get him on there again in 20 mins or so, but within 5 mins he's done more little dribbles in his pants/on the floor. So back he goes on the potty, does either nothing or another spot or two, then a change of pants, a few minutes later more dribbles in the pants, occasionally a big puddle.
Is this normal? How do I deal with it? He is getting a bit sick of me keeping asking if he needs a wee and usually says 'no', then tells me when he's done it.

ah....I remember it well....

You wait tul you take him out to the shops and every time he sees a sign for the loo, he will want to go

It does get better - you just have to get through this bit with good humour and lots of pants and jogging bottoms

Sounds like he's not ready tbh if he wees that frequently.

I know you probably won't want to hear this but afaik one of the signs of being ready is being able to go for at least an hour or two without weeing.

Imo he is either not quite ready physically, or perhaps he is enjoying the attention and making it a bit of a game.

He could well be more ready in a few weeks/months.

It's possible he isn't ready, although it's equally possible he is and it is just taking him a bit to get the hang of responding and holding etc. Besides, the initial novely does make for VERY frequent potty visits I found.

And yes, everytime you take them anywhere they will have to try the toilet out

Thanks for the responses. I should also have said that though he did the frequent weeing all yesterday afternoon (and so far today), yesterday morning it took him 2.5 hours to produce anything once I'd taken his nappy off (and then he did a big wee in the potty, which obviously gave me false expectations!). So I'm a bit confused. I'm happy to leave it if he's not ready... Perhaps he should just go pant-less when he gets up from his nap (he's sleeping in a nappy now) so I can keep a beady eye on just what is coming out and when, rather than trying to get him on the potty?

I hated potty training dd1 Jimmy, found it really stressful.

The first 2 days were awful for us, then it kind of "clicked". How about you set a kind of deadline, e.g. if he doesn't seem to have made much progress by Thurs/Fri or whenever you have a little break and try again soon?

JimmyMcNulty · 03/02/2009 14:10

Sounds like a good idea - think I will do that. Thanks.

How about building up nappyless time ? 30 minutes, then 45 etc, and as soon as you see even a drop coming out, whisk the potty under.

You can offer the potty at changing times, or when you go to the loo when he's wearing a nappy to kind of get the idea going too
