Growing boy's hair long

Good evening (again!)
Our DS is just over one and has very straight blonde hair. It is getting very long (fringe to his eyes, mullety over the ears). We would like to let it grow long but have no idea how? I know it sounds daft but do I just let it grow? What do I do about the front (we got past this stage with DD with slides and she has always had a short bob)? How should I cut it to encourage it to grow into a nice "style" (ie not mullety).
I do realise these are inane questions, but I thought someone might have some words of wisdom.
Thanks, Sam

oooo you could be me! DS2 is is 14 months and had sraightish blonde hair and only just last week did we get his fringe trimmed. I really don't want him to have a short back and sides style but with boys hair without a fringe i struggle to imagine how it might work and not look to girly (this is me being unimaginative i guess). DS1 has lovely curly (getting straighter now he is getting older 4.5) blonde hair and he has always had a fringe with jaw to shoulder lenght hair which is fab. A decent hairdresser is a must who won't just want to shave it all off. Mine suggested a longish Paul Weller type style for DS2 and i do trust him - he has super cool celec client! .

A friend has a lovely now 3 yr old boy with v blond poker straigt hair cut in a kind of page boy, IYKWIM? He looks v cute, like something out a movie set in the middle ages. I suppose you would need to keep cutting the fringe and the hair at the hairline at the back - or something? Sorry, not v technically adept at discribing hair cuts.

Thank you - I wonder if there is somewhere you can look at children's haircuts like you can at women's...

My ds has poker straight blonde hair and i've always kept it longish. He's had it pageboy style (like mummyfor3 described) but I prefer if a bit messier! I keep it that sort of length but asked hairdresser to layer it (decribed it as a kind of surfer look and she seemed to know what I wanted!) Constantly got mistaken for a girl as has huge eyelashes too. Have now obviously brainwashed him as goes crackers if anyone says it should be short
