Are earplugs a bad idea?

DD1 is 3 1/2 weeks old, and a very noisy sleeper - a full chorus of grunts, squeaks, grumbles, yelps, moans, snuffles, you name a noise, she makes it for most of the night. She's fast asleep at the time and DH can sleep through it but I can't! I've heard that you can hear fire alarms etc through earplugs, so I am guessing I should be able to hear her if she starts to cry... Has anyone has any experience or tips?

(N.B. It's not that I want to block out the noise if she is crying or wants something, but if she's happily asleep it would be nice if I could get some sleep too!)

They are a godsend. You still hear the important stuff, puking, screaming, crying etc. But it blots out the periferal (sp) noise.

That's good to know, thanks! Any recommendations on which type are best?

Boots sell some good orange foam round ended ones. They're the best I've used. They're usually near the first aid stuff.

I swear by the wax ones, more for DHs snuggling than anything else

I think it depends how deep a sleeper you are. DH used to use them when DS was in our room and he never woke up when DS cried, mind you maybe that was selective hearing

BarrelOfMonkeys · 01/02/2009 17:32

Thanks! DH also sleeps through the crying regardless of earplugs...

My favs are E.A.R classics- stiff foam cylinder. I get them from the motor bike shop or Greenham trading ( who do industrail stuff) I've tried E.A.R super soft - rounded end, softer foam and don;t find them as comfy.

I love earplugs for when I am trying to nap or have a lie in when DH has the kids.

I second the boots ones.

YOu ahve to make sure you hold them as they un-squash (is that a word) to make them work better.

I never have used them when kids sleeping, but mine arent that noisy.

bodiddly · 01/02/2009 20:15

I now can't sleep without mine. They are from Boots too but are cylindrical yellow foam rather than the orange round tipped ones!

KayHarker · 01/02/2009 20:18

Can't do the foam ones, but I have some silicon ones that are wonderful. Dh snores like a freight train going through, and I now can't hear a thing.

TheInnocentBystander · 01/02/2009 20:19

I am addicted to mine. I now cannot sleep without them. I have to take them on holiday and when I'm stopping overnight anywhere, otherwise I can't sleep .

I like the Boots muffle Wax ones. I found the foamy ones hurt my ears. You could buy both sets and try them though, the wax ones are only a couple of quid for a box of 10 or so. I've had them through both kids and have always heard them enough to get up to them.

A trip to Boots it is then! Thanks v much...
