Trimming Finger Nails

My DS is 11 months and I've been able to pop him in the Baby Bjorn to quickly trim his finger nails - for some reason he tends to not flail his arms about when he's in the BBjorn. He's on the verge of out growing the BBjorn and I need some tips on trimming his nails. I've tried when he was sleeping but it woke him up screaming the house down. I've also tried when he was playing quietly (not something he does much now that he can crawl) and clipped the tip of his finger which wasn't much fun for either of us. I'm on my own until May so it's got to be something I can do by myself.

i clipped dd's finger when she was 8 months. dear lord the blood, twas awful.

she is now 17 months. i stick her in front of in the night garden after her bath and do them really really quickly. if she notices thats it game over but so far its a pretty foolproof method.

tv has a hypnotic effect on my dd thankfully!

good luck

Do it when he is asleep.

Gorionine · 29/01/2009 14:26

I second Lionstar's advice!

With DD4 2yo, I do mine in front of her and she always want the same done to her!

Sorry, obviously didn't read you OP originally, you have tried when asleep . Do you use scissors or clippers? Clippers may be less disturbing.

georgiemum · 29/01/2009 14:45

I use embroidery scissors (bloody sharp and very fine - I found kids clippers/nail scissors too thick). I ask if anyone needs to have their 'hats off'. He new says 'is he happy? No! Take off his hat!'.

laraeo · 29/01/2009 14:58

I use clippers and am pretty efficient when he's in the BBjorn - all 10 done in a couple minutes. I'd be scared to death to use scissors of any variety (you should have seen me trying to cut his hair yesterday!). He's seen me clip my nails. Maybe I need to do his immediately after doing mine? He's also not overly fond of being held - he's a big squirmer.

I keep clippers in the glovebox and do them if dd falls asleep in the carseat

or tv

the only tv dd watched for months and months was 10min on a Sat am for nailcutting

Tillyscoutsmum · 29/01/2009 15:01

I bite them off in the bath I'm too much of a wuss to use clippers (I always make a mess of my own nails and wouldn't trust myself with dd's)

eleanorsmum · 29/01/2009 15:01

DD was like this and we turned it into a game of this little piggy. Much fun and giggles and they all got trimmed too! We use scissors too.

onwardandupward · 29/01/2009 18:50

You coudl always plan in your mind just to trim one, child permitting, and then if you manage any more in a session it's a bonus.

I'd be biting them at that age tbh.

laraeo · 30/01/2009 08:04

I like the car seat idea. And I'll definitely have to take them one at a time - that's what I do with his toenails. Let the nail trimming begin!

Biting the nails yourself is a common thing but my midwife told me that's a really bad iidea becaue that can easily infect the fingernails. Personally I always forget to do them and they just fall off by themselves so I think they must reach critical max and then just break, so I wouldn't worry about it.

angel1976 · 01/02/2009 10:15

I second ITNG! DS is 11 months old and will not let me clip his fingernails. I used to do them in spurts, two today, two tomorrow etc. It was a real pain as by the time I finished, I had to start all over again. Last night he was watching ITNG and I managed to clip all 10 in 3 minutes flat. He looked at what I was doing but didn't think to take his hand away, which he usually does...

ninedragons · 01/02/2009 10:26

Have you tried an emery board?

DD would be Edwina Scissorhands if left to her own devices.

spicemonster · 01/02/2009 10:46

I favour the sat in front of the telly method. It has to be something he's really engrossed in. I have to do them every week - they grow really fast!

laraeo · 01/02/2009 18:04

Well, I managed to do 4 of them whilst getting him dressed today. It involved some very animated singing & dancing on my part. Biting was suggested by my midwife & HV but I can't do it and I think he's past that stage anyway (my husband did it - that was one of his "jobs"). DS's need to be done every 7 - 10 days. If I can get to the point where I can a hand done per day I'll be very, very happy. Perhaps I'll try INTG tomorrow. Usually when the tv's on it's news which doesn't really keep his attention. He does like the BBC news theme song, though .
