I've just bought a bundle of secondhand BGs and am washing them for the first time after using them. They are in a load with some other cloth nappies and some clothes etc so I've put in the usual amount of powder but just remembered that the BG website says to use half the amount What do I do about the other nappies in that case (I only have eight BG so will never be a full load)? Have I just destroyed my BG or will an extra rinse save them?

I thought we're supposed to use half the detergent for all varieties of cloth nappies.

lindenlass · 28/01/2009 17:37

I didn't realise you had to use half the amount! Ours are surviving ok!

Anglepoise · 28/01/2009 17:42

Really? I didn't know that

I thought using half amounts made your washing machine whiffy?

i use about a quarter of my usual amount of powder to wash all my pockets.

lindenlass · 28/01/2009 18:52

Eek! Better tell Dh (the nappy washer!)

nappyzonehasastroppytoddler · 28/01/2009 18:52

I you use to much eventually you have a powder build up and they pong real pad - like amonia stingin eyes ponging .

nappyzonehasastroppytoddler · 28/01/2009 18:52

can you tell i was multi tasking there ?

I've started using washable wipes, which I dunk in warm water. My machine is a pretty good one, with what I thought was a good rinse and spin. The warm water goes cloudy after I dunk and squeeze the washable wipe! I assume that's residue, and that's after using half the detergent (I actually use liquid tablets, so just use 1 instead of 2.)

Nappyzone: one handed typing plus small child distraction? I'm getting much faster at the one handed typing myself!

Anglepoise · 30/01/2009 12:18

So do you use half the amount of detergent even if you're putting other clothes etc in there or do you only ever do nappies by themselves?

We use washable wipes too and the water seems okay - our washing machine is supposed to be particularly good at rinsing I think.

I use the full amount for adults but unless the baby clothes are particularly mucky I only use half the amount there. I prefer to only do nappies and wipes together, and that's what I will do when the rest of my nappies arrive and I have decently full loads just of nappies. It's partly because clothes come out hard without fabric softener and/or tumbling and he's my PFB and I prefer to dress him in soft clothes, but softener is not good for nappies. I'm going to try vinegar on them though. We've got really hard water here.

Anglepoise · 30/01/2009 13:56

Hmm - I never have a full load of just nappies. I thought using less detergent is bad for washing machines. Proper confused now!

Any suggestions for good places to bulk buy vinegar? Online it's cheap but postage is a fortune, and I have no idea where to look in RL!

I wondered that too, the cost of postage makes the vinegar less cheap! I wondered if Makro might, but I'm no longer anywhere near one.

nappyzonehasastroppytoddler · 30/01/2009 19:28

i only do nappy washes - i do 2 a week so have enough to justify 2 full loads. I like fabric conditioner on my clothes to reduce ironing so hence neer mix the clothes and nappies. Besided dh wouldnt be so keen on finding raiind in his shirts

pbo · 30/01/2009 19:43

Washable wipes? What are they and where do you get/how do you make them?

mumoftoby · 30/01/2009 20:12

pbo - Reusable wipes are great I have started to use them and got the info from a thread on here 3 weeks or so again. I got 5 packs of baby cloths from poundland. I put them in a pampers tub and pour over just enough weak camomile tea (with a little olive oil in) to all be absorbed. I then use microfibre cloths from poundland to properly dry their bottoms (as I don't want any oil to be absorbed by the nappy). The thread is really useful and had loads of different methods on. I will try to find it now, and bump it if I do.
