We have come into some money, just enough to do a kitchen extension, but have put it off as was expecting dc2, now dc2 is 6mths and dc1 is 3, i wondering whether it is a good idea or not.

I have recently started taking anxiety tablets due to bitting my tongue which started while i was trying for dc2 - stressed about birth and stress off inlaws.

What would you do? My mum thinks it's a good idea but she doesn't know about the tablets prescibed.

If you aren't desperate for the extension, I would probably put it off for a couple of years - I have a bit of anxiety and I have a 2yo and 10mo. I wouldn't like my house carved up at the moment, it's too stressful. Perhaps someone more positive will come along, but I would wait until your 3yo goes to school or something and will be out in the day.

sorry but i agree with crokky, kids still a bit young.

our neighbour started a kitchen extension thinking it would be done by the time dc2 was born (in 4 months), they finished when dc2 was 6 months old!!!! she spent most of her days out and about, she put on a brave face but i'm sure it cant have been pleasant for her..... if you decide to do it get a contract that they will finish by x date or they start owing you money!

no we're not desperate for the extension and we do have a nice kitchen, just small! We would be keeping all the units etc just shuffling them round, we would also be keeping the oven, so just literally adding on a bit more space and a few units.

I know what you're both saying as this was what dh & i originally discussed and decided on but just recently i have been wondering whether to go for it before the money gets swallowed up on something else.

well we have got a holiday booked in june, so that could be a good time for them to do that. We're keeping the cooker where it is so that's one thing, but obviously there will be the mess and distruption factor.

We decided to get a loft onversion when we found I was pregnant. It was supposed to be done by end June, but the builder went bust and we had no roof until December, and big holes in it for windows until last week. And a baby born in September.

We vowed that if I manage to get pregnant again, the first thing we do is cancel any plans to redo the kitchen extension!

However the current kitchen for us would need total knocking down and rebuilding the back of the house, so it's a bit more of a job. Do get a lot of quotes, agree on exactly what is needed, and make sure all payment is made only after certain tasks are done, not on certain dates - and ensure a finish time is part of the contract.

Could you save most of the money and get plans drawn up, so you can go ahead in a couple year's time (or when you go away for a couple weeks?)
