Nappies for car journeys - am I the only one?

I've talked to a few other mummies who tell me that they've never put their child in a nappy for going on a long car journey.

I'm sure there are others out there, or am I really the only one?

erm, not once they're potty trained, no.

Deemented · 25/01/2009 23:22

Depends on how old the child is, to be honest. My dd is 8 months and she'd be in one. My son is 4 and wouldn't, and we regularly do car journeys of 6 hours or so, with two or three stops.

Hangingbellyofbabylon · 25/01/2009 23:28

yes, don't worry. For ages my dd called pull-ups 'car pants' because they was they only time she wore them. We tried a few times before but we were forever having to stop every 10 mins and get the potty out as she did have a very weak bladder for a long time. Now, aged 4 we can usually go for about an hour but more than that could be hard for her. Don't worry at all, every child is different.

I used them when DS and DD were newly potty trained and going on a long journey, but to be honest, I don't think they ever actually needed them.

SunshinePine · 25/01/2009 23:39

My boys are now 7 and 9 so only need them in the car if it's overnight (bedwetters)

When they were about 5 they still got a nappy if it was over 2 hours

DS is 5 and DD is 3 and I can't remember when I last put either of them in a nappy for any length of journey.

JackBauer · 25/01/2009 23:49

DD1 is 2.11 and I dont put a nappy on ehr in the car, havent since she was trained 2 months ago and we go away for 3-4 hour journeys.y
I make her go before we leave, stop every 2-3 hours so she can wee if she wants, and I have a travel potty in teh car for emergencies (side of the road jobs...) but she has never had an accident (or willingly used public loos either...takes after me!)

PinkFurryStripeyTiger · 25/01/2009 23:53

DS is 3.7 and he doesn't wear any sort of nappy. He is our eldest, though, so we have to stop regulalry on long journeys anyway.

You can get piddle pads I've seen, to protect cars eats from accidents, if yuo don't want to use a nappy? Don't know how well they work.

Hangingbellyofbabylon · 25/01/2009 23:58

the piddle pads aren't great tbh, they certainly didn't hold the several pints of wee my dd used to do - have 'fond' memories of removing dripping piddle pad to discover car seat was wet anyway. And of course with piddle pad they end up wet through as well, so it's a change of clothes and not just a change of pull-up.

PinkFurryStripeyTiger · 26/01/2009 00:07

Ahh I see. As you say, I'd just go with what works for you, Sunshine. I don't know what we'll be like with DD1 (2.3)- she a bit of a 'lots of little wees' type, too, whereas DS was always saved his up, IYSWIM!

loiscampbell · 10/05/2010 09:00

we used cloth training pants and pastic pants over them for car trips. at home, we use cloth diapers an plastic pants.
We have 4 boys all bed wet

I used pull ups on my 4 and 5yr olds for the trip to MIL's (4-5hrs) and then the trips up here (before we moved here LOL) which is 18hr straight trip!

DD1 didnt like it, but it was for me in case she fell asleep and didnt wake (despite being dry at night) and DD2 wasnt fazed as she is still in pull ups at night anyway - taking after me with the bed wetting.

Both of them remained dry on said trips, so I think unless it was an overnight trip - and even then i would only do it for DD2, I wont bother anymore.

DS is only 2 and in nappies still anyway so not an issue!
