Hi all. I am in the final year of an english degree (mature student). I had always wanted to teach english to secondary school kids, but had a family crisis last year and changed my mind. Anyway to cut a long story short, I really think i do want to teach after all. I can't afford to do a pgce, and wanted to enrol on the gtp programme I've been told to ring a few schools and ask if they'll take me on-all seems bit odd to me, is this how you approach the course?? Know i've left it late for starting sept this year, but any suggestions would be great.

Mosy councils have a GTP thingy, so look on your local council website, as well as neighbouring councils. Yes, some schools may take on their own GTP candidates, so you could write to them.

Our council website recommends volunteering at schools where you are interested in working. I had been considering GTP and agree that it is funny how the application system works. My cousin, who is a teacher said I should write in with a CV, offer to volunteer, get to know people, get involved in the school and then ask about being taken on as a GTP trainee.
