Hi, my DS is now 6 weeks old and rapidly growing out of his moses basket. Can anyone recommend a good cot that isn't too expensive? We are currently renting in a flat, his cot will have to go in our bedroom with us so it can't be too huge ie a cot-bed, although our room is quite a decent size. We will have to get a decent mattress as he has had mild flat head syndrome, which we currently use a small pillow for - we will have to stop using that when he is able to turn over though. Any advice gratefully received :-) Thank you!

ikea?
otherwise I think motehrcare do some very reasonable bog-standard cots

Who has advised you to use a pillow on such a young child?

If you don't mind preloved I have a cot for sale.

Might be worth checking out Argos or Tescos Direct (can use tesco club card points too!!)

£60 mothercare cot

should be fine! a cot's a cot after all. as you say it's the mattress that's the key thing.

What will you do when he is too big for the cot, out of interest?

And roughly what part of the UK are you in? Kiddicare in Peterborough, for instance, often has end of range cots in store at very good prices.

The alternative, if you are not overly fussed about having new, is to look on preloved.

TBH I don't think there is any value in paying huge amounts of money on a cot. We have never used the drop side on ours as it is too squeaky - we managed without.

Multi-level base was useful though.

My 11mth DD is in the Ashton cot Thisisyesterday linked to and its fine.

But we only bought it a yr ago and it was £50 then

Bella73 · 23/01/2009 20:04

I got a nice cot from John Lewis for something like £69 about 6 months ago and it's fine (2 heights and a drop side). 60cm x 120cm.

Northernlurker · 23/01/2009 20:05

Ikea - very good cots that are the perfect size

simpson · 23/01/2009 20:06

Yes we don't use the drop side either.

Will be fine to get one with sides fixed as that will probably be cheaper

rachels103 · 23/01/2009 20:36

I wouldn't bother with a drop side either, but do get one where you can vary the height.
The frame itself isn't important (Ikea?) but we got a decent mattress from John Lewis - a proper sprung one.
Re: the flat head syndrome...I worried sick about this with ds, especially as insensitive chiropractor acquaintance tried to bully us into booking sessions with him to correct it but it righted itself with no intervention from us and you would never know now. (He's 3) It wasn't 'mild' either - he looked quite squashed for a while!

chandellina · 23/01/2009 22:09

what's the story with the pillows? my DS has one (the firm foam kind with the indentation for their head). He is rolling over now - should i take it out?

theresonlyme · 24/01/2009 08:47

rachels103 I am sure the chiropractor was only trying to help. You were lucky it did right itself and it was probably not plagiocephaly.

mummy2benji · 24/01/2009 23:34

Chandellina - the pillow I have is a Goi Goi baby pillow specially designed to prevent and treat flat head syndrome. It is a small soft pillow which is safe to use up until they start being able to turn over, then you should stop using them to avoid the risk of suffocating. I got it myself because I'm a gp. Yours should be fine because it is firm and not soft like a normal pillow. Just check the instructions with it to make sure you are still safe to use it. If it is the heart-shaped Lovenest pillow by Jojo Maman Bebe (I have that too) then it says 0-4 months on the leaflet that comes with it.
