Calling Flame! (or anyone else with wool wrap expertise)

Hi I use two part nappies full time on my DS. I'm seriously tempted by some wool wraps, although I haven't used them before. Which ones are best. I quite like the look of the Stacinator, or the Swaddlebees wool wrap. Also how often do wool wraps need to be lanolised etc?
I get on quite well with the Airflows I have - are wool wraps worth the money?

Hi AnnVan, I am also interested in buying a wool wrap for over night - so am also keen for you to get a response from an expert!

Deemented · 23/01/2009 13:18

I'm not an expert by any means, but i have been using wool at night with my daughter (now 8 months) since November last year and have never had any leaks.

I'm a poster on Cloth Nappy Addicts, and November is Buy Britsh Month, and i saw a lovely soaker that a WAHM had made and in my curiosity, i bought it. It was the best thing i've ever done. I was struggling at night, using well boosted Little Lambs and a Mother Ease wrap, and my daughter was wet every morning, so i thought i had nothing to loose, trying the soaker. She then went on to make me another soaker and a pair of longies to my daughters exact measurements. I'm so glad i did - i'd never go back to PUL wraps at bedtime now. It came ready lanolised and ready to wear, and no kidding, my daughter had it on every night sice i got it, until about a week ago when i got some Longies, which i use for nighttime now.

I'm not sure of the science behind it, but the wool works really well - i'd take it off her in the morning, leave it air through the day and then put it back on at night. As long as it doesn't start to smell of wee - that's when you know it needs washing and lanolising again.

The WAHM i bought of is Tempestous Poppet, and i can't reccomend her enough - she sent me some really useful information on how to care for and look after my soaker and longies, and is always happy to help - she's even given me very basic instructions on how to re-lanolise ect.

I'm not sure if i've helped any here - probably just waffled - but if there's anything i can help with, just shout!

AnnVan · 23/01/2009 13:30

Deemented - thanks for the 'waffle'. Very informative. Still umming and aahing over it I'm not a particularly decisive person. Might take a look at CLoth Nappy Addicts.

Would you be interested in me making you one?

AnnVan · 23/01/2009 13:38

Oooooh! how much do you charge?

OP posts:
WhereTheWildThingsWere · 23/01/2009 13:54

I have only ever made them for my own children, so you would be my first customer! £8 delivered?
I don't knit them, I sew them from recycled shrunken jumpers. They look a little odd off, but super cute on and work brilliantly.

I would need you to measure your ds round the widest part of his night nappy and then again from the back to the front between his legs iyswim?

Do you mind what colour? As I have never sold one before I would be happy to send it to you and If you like it you can pay me and if you don't you can send it back [trusting emoticon].

WhereTheWildThingsWere · 23/01/2009 13:56

Oh and I would supply lanolised and ready to wear.

If used every night it would need washing every 2-3 weeks and re-lanolising every 6-8 weeks.

AnnVan · 23/01/2009 14:02

ok - sounds good (now I need to get a tape measure)Another quick question then - are woolies ok for summer, or do they get really warm?

OP posts:
Deemented · 23/01/2009 14:06

Woolies are fab for summer - have already got my request in for shorties, skirties and skorties!!!

WhereTheWildThingsWere · 23/01/2009 14:11

No because wool is natural and breathable so cool in the summer warm in the winter, they work because wool can absorb 40% of it's own weight in water before it feels damp, so they absorb the wee, the lanolin neutralizes it and then the water slowly evaporates, as a result of this pjs can feel very slightly damp in the morning, but they are not really, they are just cool from the evaporation, in the same way, the soaker will smell very slightly of wee when you take it off, put after airing (I hang ours over the bedroom door) for a few hours it will smell as fresh as a daisy.

This is the same with all wool wraps, just so you don't think it is a problem.

AnnVan · 23/01/2009 14:26

ok Thanks for that. Hope it doesn't freak DP out too much
Oh and about colours - not too fussed, just not pink, as DP would throw a fit. I like bright colours though, so anything's fine really.

OP posts:
WhereTheWildThingsWere · 23/01/2009 14:31

Think how my dp feels then, I make the things! He thinks I am a crazy lady. I will put my e-mail on my profile for the next couple of hours, can you e-mail me his measurements and your address? It will take me a week to 10 days ish is that ok?

Isaidno · 23/01/2009 14:36

if anyone is looking for a knitting pattern I can recommend this one easy to make and cute!

AnnVan · 23/01/2009 15:01

OP posts:
VampiresWalkin · 23/01/2009 15:04

They look nice and neat, I haven't tried one myself, but sorkycake (I think has).

WhereTheWildThingsWere · 23/01/2009 15:44
