Is this nappy rash? Skin looks all dry and crepey although not an actual 'rash', it does look both very dry and white, but also has some red patches. Should I be putting cream of some description on it do you think? for stupid question, spot the newbie mum

Try Sudocrem as a barrier against wet, or Metanium cream if it's going redder or starts to get raw looking.
I swear by both of these.

lollipopmother · 18/01/2009 21:26

Thanks MacDugs, do you use cloth or disposies? I use cloth so not sure that I can put cream on full time, I thought maybe just during nappy off time to rejuvenate it maybe? She gets approx 3-4hrs of nappy off time a day.

Sounds like thrush. Take your little on to the GP so they can look at it and give you some cream to put on it.

Ah, a quick question to the poster who mentioned thrush. My ds is in washables and has had no problem but has developed red spots on his bum (I think through a combination of suddenly being a lot wetter than he ever has been, teething and being generally under the weather). I swear by metanium but so far it hasn't really worked. Is it worth a trip to the doctor if it could be thrush?

TheTwaMacDugs · 18/01/2009 21:30

I'm a disposable user

As scrooged said, get it checked out first and make sure it isn't thrush.

Not sure how the ceams would work with real nappies

scrooged · 18/01/2009 21:34

Hmm. Thrush is more white (from what I've seen) with red patches where the thrush has come off leaving a sore patch, the red spots may just be spots because it's moist and the pores may be getting blocked and inflamed. Check it with the GP/HV though as I can't see your baby's spots so I could be wrong. I found Boots zinc and caster oil cream worked really well on my son's bum! It can be trial and error though.

scrooged · 18/01/2009 21:35

It's best to keep it dry, with all nappies, they can get wet and warm, not nice conditions for any type of skin. Leave the nappy off if you can.

lollipopmother · 18/01/2009 21:39

Oh bum, thrush? Gutted, I was hoping for you all to say just whack some moisturiser on it

It could be. It can be really hard to tell from a description, which is why you need to pop to the GP. It's nothing to worry about, alot of little ones get this.

littlelamb · 19/01/2009 17:19

Thank you for the advice scrooged. I took ds to the health visitor today and he has got thrush- I never would have taken him unless you'd suggested it so thank you He has some cream that will hopefully clear things up. He has lost 5oz this week which is the first time he has ever lost weight (he didn't even lose any after birth) so I do think he has been very under the weather.

Hi Littlelamb, have been reading this thread and am now wondering if my DD has thrush. She has had a red bum for ages now with little spots in it, and have also been using metanium because I think its brilliant, but as yet doesnt seem to be able to shift it. Sometimes it looks more red then other times and she has been getting some white stuff in the creases of her legs at the sides of her little girly bits! Also anyone else who has any advice? (sorry to completely hijack your thread lollipop!)

littlelamb · 19/01/2009 18:26

I think it's worth seeing the HV. Ds's didn't look at all what I would think thrush would look like but they said it often just looks like red spots and they did say that if metanium wasn't helping it was more than likely thrush. They have said to put the cream on under the metanium so his skin is still protected.

keels26 · 19/01/2009 19:19

Do you no what cream it is? Was wondering if I can buy some over the counter as its very hard to get appointment at my doctors. (Shes 14 months.)

littlelamb · 19/01/2009 20:09

It's just canestan cream. You should be able to ask the pharmacist if she needs a 'lower dose' one? Our pharmacist in Botos is always happy to help with stuff like this

scrooged · 21/01/2009 22:13

I'm pleased you know what it is . I hope he's feeling better soon. It must be sore.

trufflebum · 22/01/2009 13:01

you can use creams in cloth nappies- if any are particuarly oily and wont wash out the fabric then rub washing up liquid (or vodka) into it and it will break down the oils.
Poor little soul, hope he clears up.
