Playstation Dilemma

DS, aged 8, has a PS2 and it broke. Probably not worth paying for it to be fixed - I might as well buy a new PS2, they are not expensive but a bit out of date, so is that a waste of money?
Should I get something else instead, and what?
PS3 seems a bit expensive, so not keen on it. Maybe Wii Sports?
Just looking for ideas really. Anyone?

By the way, I don't LIKE any of them. Should I just say no and take the risk of DS becoming a social outcast? ('But Mummy, all my friends have one!')

erm not sure. i have started telling dd that (i am lp and very little income) if she can't look after her toys and they get broke, i use that as learning curve for her in that she shouldn't leave toys in the middle of the floor for either of us to trip over, as i can't afford to replace them.

I would replace the PS2 - unless you have the money for the Wii.

DS1 and 2's PS2 (which had been 2nd hand) broke early last year. We (exH and I clubbed togheter) replaced it with a new one. There are so many games available for it cheaply, and infact more available than for the PS3.

I did then buy them a Wii for Christmas, however rather then getting rid of the PS2 it went to exH's house ot live there.

We can get good reconditioned PS2s for about £35.

We did end up getting a Wii for Christmas, but they are still getting lots of use out of the PS2 as well.

Looks like another PS2 then!
DH is strongly against spending money on a Wii so no choise really.
I was secretly thinking about a Wii Fit that I can use as well, but after reading the thread on it I've gone off the idea. It seems to encourage unhealthy obsession with weight in children.
Thanks for replies!

vess - don't be put off a Wii fit. We had some issues with DD10 when we first set it up, but that was really down to me not necessarily reading the 'blurb' carefully enough - we have had hours of fun with it!

vess · 12/01/2009 11:43

Thanks, LightShines! Will consider it, although it at the moment it seems it has to go on the list for next Christmas.

replace the ps2 seeing as you will already have games for it

DaddyJ · 12/01/2009 11:59

Another vote for PS2 for all the reasons mentioned.

LightShinesInTheDarkness · 12/01/2009 13:25

In that case replace the PS2!

Most of the PS3 games are aimed at adults, there is really not a lot for kids. XBox 360 do more for children and I think are a bit cheaper, but at age 8 probably not worth the extra over a re-con PS2 for the time being.

Go to a local game shop and you can probably buy a second hand PS2 - people take their old consoles and games and trade them in for new stuff. We got DS's Gameboy Advance like that.

nickschick · 12/01/2009 13:34

if i were you and i had spare time on a saturday i would loiter outside a game shop and watch people going in i saw somneone trade a slimline ps2 and 40 games and they got £47 pounds back btw sony are fab at customer service if yours is relatively new (or you think it might be ) they courier collect yours and at the same time drop a reconditioned one off and its a swap!
