Little LEAKY Lambs! Help!

MamacitaGordita · 07/01/2009 13:42

We've been using Little Lamb cloth nappies (the microfibre ones, with a booster and the Little Lamb velcro wrap) quite merrily on our 8 week old DS.

Over Christmas, staying at in-laws, his wet nappies started reeking (I mean eye-wateringly) of ammonia and leaking terribly, especially right at the front where the Little Lamb label sits on the wrap. A bit of googling and I discovered too much detergent (build up) can cause both these issues and also that liquid detergent can cause leaks.

So back home we 'stripped' the nappies and they no longer smell of ammonia at all and the leaks have definately lessened, but still persit!

I've cut off the labels which has helped, but around the legs we're still getting leaks. Have I somehow knackered the wraps? Can they be 're-waterproofed?' I love using cloth and was all smug about how easy peasy it all was but am running out of outfit changes for the little guy!
TIA

I have had problems with some wraps losing waterproofness, although after 2 years of use. I wondered if this wa due to washing wraps at 60 along with nappies??

How did you strip the ammonia maybe this has affected the wraps.

Anyway the best wraps ive found are the onelife popper ones, mine 3 yrs old now and still going strong on DS2.

Dont give up on cloth, just try a new wrap maybe??

Also if your baby is only 8 weeks old might be worth contacting little lamb as surely no wrap should have these problems after such short use?

I also only ever use half the detergent of a normal wash in my nappy load plus white vinegar in the fabric conditioner section. I find if i use normal amount of detergent it foams ridicuously.

Could you try boosting the nappy a bit more, and see if that helps any?

MamacitaGordita · 07/01/2009 14:49

Thanks for your replies- To 'strip' I just washed the nappies on a higher heat than normal (usually wash at 40, so stripped at 60) with no detergent and rinsed and rinsed til no more bubbles or residual pong. I have tried another booster to no avail- it really seems to be a wrap problem. I will contact Little Lamb- if you are using your cloth nappies 3 years down the line we should last longer than 8 weeks you're right!

I'll also try cutting down on the detergent and sloshing in some vinegar.

I do love the bigger bottomed look on my wee DS so if these wraps are history I'll try another make...just reluctant to shell out more cash! Grrr!

will get back to you, but I have a method for stripping that really works....it's on the Nappy Chat thread vol 1....gotta do school run now though so no time to search for it

I know I tell everyone this, but I highly recommend Motherease Airflow wraps...and they fit just perfectly over Little Lamb nappies! If you're having leaks with LL, I think it must be the wraps, as the nappies are good quality. Having said that, I've only used the cotton Little Lambs...but have no reason to believe the ones you have shouldn't be working. So, you should really try some Motherease Airflows ....and probably your problem will disappear! I pick them up secondhand and can often get good deals on them too. And they really do last for ages without wearing out...or so I've found! I think I've ended up with some of them in all possible sizes as I can't imagine cloth nappies without Motherease wraps! Supposedly the Popolino Vento ones are very similar to Motherease and work just as well too. Anyway, hope you get it sorted out!

I agree taht its probably the wraps, also is ur DS quite a fat little thing? my ds was, and i found that the leaks improved a lot when I changed his wraps. I am now using LL size 2 wraps and have found them v effective. strangely, my motherease rikki wraps weren't fantastic tho!

MamacitaGordita · 08/01/2009 14:27

Thanks for the advice- those Motherease Airflows certainly pop up on MN a lot! Will have a look and see if I can get a couple second hand to try.

I contacted LL and they are sending me some more wraps as the leaky label thing apparently indicates a fault.

SilverSixpence funnily enough he is a chunky monkey...

Really pleased that we'll be able to solve the problem and keep using cloth- that big bum gives you something to hold on to and pat! x
