12 month old DS throwing up/diaorhea all day - Advice needed

He can't even keep down water, so we're worried about dehydration. More throwing up than pooping, but runny nappies too. Temp only 37.7 C so no fever.
When would you call a doctor out?

This is a first time so any advice welcome.

Yes or at least ring NHS direct up for advice.

Hope you little man is on the mend soon.

Is he weeing? Is he vomiting immediatly after drinking? Does his mouth look dry? Eyes sunken? Skin dry?

lilimama · 03/01/2009 19:50

He's weeing and his mouth doesnt look dry etc. He is vomiting pretty much immediately after drinking. Seems like a tummy bug or something...
will look out for the signs you mention and call the night doctor (we're not in the UK).
He's in his bed sleeping now. I guess we should keep him on his side incase of vomiting and listen out in the night?

The biggest worry is dehydration. Definitely get him seen by an emergency doc if he's still throwing up in the morning but in the meantime get some dioralyte (tescos sell it off the shelf), make it up and give it on a spoon, one spoonful every 10 mins, hopefully this will get in before it makes him sick as its more rapidly absorbed than water. If he keeps that down try also offering flat lemonade as well for the sugar content.

Pheebe · 03/01/2009 20:34

O just seen you're not in the UK, if you can't get dioralyte just use plain water

this is a good website for how to keep them hydrated and introduce foods back

It's better to give them little bits of rehydration solution or flat lemonade often, approx 5ml at a time rather than a bottle when they are vomiting, this way there's more of a chance that they will keep some of it down. You need to take him to a doctor after 24 hours if he's still the same. Look out for the signs above and if he's drowsy.

Mine had this - ended up in hospital with dehydration - second time doc said 5ml syringes of dioralite every 5/10 mins. Did nothing else all afternoon was very tedious but it kept her hydrated and she didn't need hospital. They get dehydrated so so quickly is quite scary, so just very little and very often with water or dioralite.

When my ds was about 14 mths he had a terrible vomitting bug. I eventually took him to an emergency appointment after over a week. He couldn't keep anything down at all. However he wasn't even dehydrated after that length of time!!

I think it is best to just keep giving him water. You could give him cooled boiled water with a bit of sugar and salt in it to keep him hydrated and give him energy. Even if he throws up it will have done some good.

The advice we were given was absolutely NOTHING except water for 36 hours. However we couldn't stick to it in the end cos ds was crying for food.

We ended up feeding him readybreak made up with water and sugar whenever he was really hungry.

Hope he gets better soon.
