When kids get out of their routine...whats the easiest way to get them back to bed at a normal time?

Starting to regret going to a NYE gathering at a friends house yesterday. DD (1 year) stayed up till 2am, happily playing with other kids.

How the hell do I get her to sleep this evening?

Usual bedtime is 7pm but has been later most days over christmas

God I have SO much to do and was hoping to do it when she is in bed and then get an early night.

Just try putting her down. She won't fall asleep until you do!

It's not so much when they go to bed as when they get up that counts IMO. If she won't sleep tonight make sure she still gets up.naps at the same time tomorrow and she will get back in synch.

Hi chloemegjess, I know it doesn't help you but can I ask how late DD slept in fo after 2am?

My DD is 11 months and am curious as to how she would handle the occassional late night, and whether I would get a lie in?!

chloemegjess · 01/01/2009 19:52

Yes, she slept in till midday and so did i! BUT she is quite used to having the odd night like this and we have never had a strict routine, she comes everywhere with us, rather than getting a babysitter. Usually I can get her back on track quite fast but I think it is just because we had so much disruption over Christmas, and then it was her birthday and then new year so it is all so much for her.

THINK we might have a break through, she seems to be asleep FOR NOW. SO going to try and get lots done while she is asleep so I don' have as much to do if she wakes up.

She has woken up

Think she thinks it is a nap

start bringing her bed time forward again (use the same principle as with jetlag) - make sure tomorrow she has only her usual naps, wake her up at usual time, make sure she gets some resh air and natural daylight (particularly early afternoon) and she will be back to normal soon enough.

Tonight she should be ready to go down again in a couple of hours so will be moving forwards - do all the usual bedtime routine things with her as usual before putting her down again.

mrsmaidamess · 01/01/2009 20:55

chloe, are you getting her out of bed? Or putting her back down as its night time?

chloemegjess · 01/01/2009 21:00

She came downstairs, had 2 bottles of milk and some cuddles and then went back to sleep.

Excellent - she may wake up again a couple of times tonight but should be back to normal (fingers crossed) tomorrow.

if you wake them up in the morning. hopefully they are tired earlier than the previous night.

All 3 of mine have been going to bed late over the holidays and then getting up late which has been nice as i can have a lie in

This morning, i woke my daughter because if i didn't she would sleep till noon and then not go to bed until 11. Her normal bedtime is 8 but i think that today i will get her into bed for about 9 and then bring it slowly forward as well as making sure she is awake fairly early

i hope that makes sense
