Would it be dangerous if I put DD (2.3) into a toddler bed but kept her in her gro bag?

Would she be more likely to injure herself if she fell or climbed out? She sleeps so well in the gro bag but has definately outgrown the cot, she can almost climb out and rocks it which tips it slightly I am scared she will tip it right over so need to move her ASAP!

I've got a toddler bed that someone gave me so just need to assemble it then get mattress and sheets. Seems a huge change to move beds and lose the gro bag at the same time.

I've got a grobag duvet which zips onto the sheet so they feel snug like they are in a sleeping bag. Yes I think it would be dangerous to keep her in one.

My son is 18 months in a bed and gro-bag. He gets out of bed and toddles around in it. I was worried initailly but he seems to cope fine, and never falls over.

He climbs out of bed in it, walks into our room and climbs onto our bed in it.

No, we did this.It was fine..

Mine kept their grobags on, they just stick their feet in the corners and shuffle like a penguin, never had any accidents although yes they could do. Long shot tho.

Oh now I don't know who to go with! DD walks in hers Specialoffer too! I am worried she would get it caught on the bed or something...I am a panicker though.

Those grobag duvets are a good idea, not sure she would stay put but I suppose that is the point with a bed. Are my full nights sleeps going to stop now? Do your DCs get out of bed now that they can?

depends on your child.

when i moved dd1 to a bed (she was 3!) I had to get rid of her grobags at the same time, as I knew I couldn't show her how to get in and out safely (she is autistic, and cannot copy anything, and also has a severe language delay).

dd2, who we will be moving any day now, will probably be ok going into a bed and keeping grobags, as she has sussed how to go up and down stairs in them, and I figure there's not much difference between that and getting in/out of bed.

We recently moved ds to a bed, as he was climbing out of his cot!! Everyone told me it would be awful as he is only 18 months old. But to be honest, he has been fine. He sleeps the same as before (I sleep better as I am not panicing he is doing a great escape!!), if he wakes he comes into my room and I just take him back to bed. Once the novelty wore off, its just another place to sleep. He does love his bed tho.

Its lovely having him wake me in the morning!!

Oh he has trapped his gro bag under the door a few times as he opens it, but has learnt to sit down and call for me.

Silverfog my DD has language delay too although she would screech at me I think if she got stuck.Would be difficult to explain to her about doing it safely too hmm hadn't thought of that good point. Not sure about the climbing thing she is a bit of an escape artist so would probably get out but quite able to walk in it so maybe she would be ok from that point of view. I had this idea it might be dangerous but couldnt exactly think why!

Specialoffer thats very reassuring that your DS sleep just as well. I am worried about DD tipping the cot so can't really relax either till she has been moved. I could put a stair gate on her room but might put it on the living room door instead so she can get to me but not into the living room and kitchen where she could get up to all sorts of mischief.

we moved dd1 straight into a normal single bed, which is quite high (divan base and deep mattress) so i worried that she would not be able to get back up into bed in a grobag (she gets into her bed the same way you might get out of a swimming pool - swing one leg up and then heave yourself up, iyswim)

She has slept brilliantly since going into her bed - she really loves it. She si a bit up and down in her room (but she can't open her door so stays in her room) but she goes to sleep fine and stays asleep fine. We do use fleecy sleepsuits for her though, as she hasn't mastered staying under a blanket/duvet.

used2bthin · 30/12/2008 13:58

Fleecy sleepsuits! That may well be the answer thank you! I don't think DD would be able to climb back in with a grobag on either. Where do you get the fleecy sleepsuits from? I wonder if they would irritate DDs excema and psoriasis though. Thats probably a whole other thread though!

Used2bethin - we moved DS to a bed and using a duvet at same time when he was just over 2 - he loves being in a bed rather than cot and has only once in 4 months actually got out of it of his own accord [hmmm]. A tip I read on mumsnet was that on a toddler bed you can turn the duvet sideways, so that the width of the duvet runs the length of the bed and then tuck the ends under the mattress. That way DC doesn't get out of the covers (very much) but if they do get out of bed are free to roam in their pyjamas. Might be worth a try. We also keep stairgate shut when he's upstairs, so if he did get out of bed during night he could't fall downstairs (I guess that's obvious though )

silverfrog · 30/12/2008 14:13

we got dd1's last lot from mothercare. i think they go quite large.

dd1 is in either 4-5 or 5-6 ( hopeless mother emoticon) as she is fairly tall for her age.

used2bthin · 30/12/2008 14:14

That is a good idea I may have to try that one. Oh blimey the expense! Mattress, sheets, quilt and quilt covers argh! Where am I going to find al these anyone seen any bargains? Well the mattress has to be mothercare I think as thats where the toddler bed was from. I think anyway it (it was given to me).

As for stair gates we are in a flat so luckily not got that added complication although I will have to make sure she doesn't get into the living room and kitchen to cause havoc!

We changed to a duvet at the same time as we put DD in her 'big girls' bed'. But we did this because the grobag was almost like a comfort blanket for her, even in searing heat on holiday, she refused to go to bed without it; so we had to break the habit somehow - we took her out and she chose her duvet cover. Never had a problem, and she has never got out of bed on her own - still calls for us in the morning (which drives me a bit potty tbh, but it could be loads worse!)

UniS · 30/12/2008 20:43

boy does a bit of both. started useing sheet and blankets shortly before he moved out of the cot so he got used to them, then he has been in a bed with sheet and blanket for 6 monts just recently in the cold snap he has gone back to gro bag plus sheet and blanket.
It does depemd on your childs habits tho. Boy has only once got out of bed on his own ( in over 6 months) So I'm not worried about him wondering the house.

I found cheap flece blankets at Sainsburys- about 5 quid each - sold as flece throws . these work well on a toddler bed. Still using the same flat sheets as we bought for teh travel cot/ cot but turned sideways so they can be tucked in. fitted cot bed sheets were about 5 quid for a pair in boots, Cot blanket still does duty as an extra blanket when needed.
