When did your DDs start to be able to sit on public loos?

DD is 3.4, potty trained for 4-5 months. She flirted with using our loo at home (sitting on a padded toilet seat), but now refuses to use it and will only go on the potty.

So when we go out, we have to drag a potty about and it's a right old pain. I haven't made an issue of it as I've just been so glad that she's managed this big milestone. But I'm wondering when and how everyone else managed to make the transition to public loos. Carrying a child size toilet seat around would hardly be much easier than the potty!
Most of my friends have boys and they seem to manage to wee while standing now, so it's not an issue for them.

just do it
if she needs the loo, you loft her into it

dont bother heftin a potty around, silly idea
she is old enough to understand that it is time to move on

TrinityRhino · 21/12/2008 00:05

take the padded seat off too
let her be like you
she will be fine
she may like it more without as it is the same as you

A useful thing is a toodle-loo (something like that anyway - try googling it) it's a fold up loo seat that fits into a bag, and means they have a clean seat to sit on too (public loos can be so grotty.....)

My son could sit on one at that age (he poos a lot).

get her to brace her hands on the seat behind her.

dd was potty trained in august at 2.3 and since then she sits on public loos and braces either side with hands while i hover close by so she feels safe, i did get a portable padded toilet seat but it wasnt very portable so i just put paper on the seat

I think I used to support their back a bit, but right from a start, really, they perched on public loos. Small toddlers, so had to hold onto edges (wash hands afterwards).

I got a potette plus for my daughter until she was OK about using big toilets without the small seat on top. She was quite terrified she'd fall in (esp as she's quite petite), but I must admit that it wasn't essential for very long. However, at first she wouldn't do anything on the big toilet - she just froze up and couldn't get anything to come out. So seemed the small travel seat (potette plus) really did the trick and helped with the transition.

dd is 2.7 and potty trained about 3 wks ago. she balances there on the loo and has been known to attempt parallell bar routines!

My DD (22 months) has recently consented to using an 'adult' loo, but is so small she needs to be lifted up and held on. She also insists on complete removal of pants and trousers (and thus shoes), which is a right faff in public loos - not to mention the hygiene side of things. Still it's better than lugging a potty around.

my 2.3 year old ds also sits on public toilets and has for a month or so. We also have to strip him from the waist down to go to the toilet or the pee shoots everywhere. He perches on with his legs wide and his hands holding on in front of him.

thanks everyone - still lugging that potty about so it's great to have some more ideas.

Nelly the elephant - never heard of the toodle loo before, it looks just the thing for my sensitive DD. Surprised they don't make something similar for hygiene-conscious adults!
