Changing nappy at night?

BCLass · 20/12/2008 21:21

Please help a novice! DD is 9 weeks and we have used cloth from birth and use bambeasies at night, so very absorbant.

She has started sleeping really well and if she is fed in the dark about 4am will go back to sleep straight away.

But should I be changing her nappy at this time or is it ok to leave till the morning? Changing her wakes her up good and proper.

We put the last nappy of the day on about 10pm. What time should I change it, assuming no poo?

Thanks in advance.

change it when wakes up after the 4am feed (ie 7/8am)... if she is not waking with it/leaking then it should be fine.. I leave dd on from when she goes to bed til 7am if its not properly dirty

Unless there is poo or leaks just leave it on until she wakes for the day. I think my DD was about that age when I stopped changing her at night.

I never change at night unless there is poo. It depends if your DD is prone to nappy rash - I'm lucky that DS1 had an iron bum and (touch wood) DS2 seems to have too so far, so I can leave them in pee 12 hours without any probs. If there's poo or they seem in discomfort then I change but otherwise, not worth waking them imo.

tyv, nappy rash is the reason I ask - sometimes her bum is red and after her bath tonight I noticed the texture had changed like it had been damaged.

We have been having lots of nappy free time and trying to change more frquently in the day.

I only change DD in the night if she's pooey. Wet nappies get left. DD is 11months old now but that was my thoughts at the 9 weeks stage aswell.

In that case it would probably be well worth applying a thin layer of something gentle each night before bed. I like the Weleda bum cream for those maybe-maybe-not about to get sore situations.

You can always use a paper liner if your worried about clogging up the fleece liner. Metanium is THE cream if she does get sore.

BCLass · 20/12/2008 22:40

I bought some metanium in case, opened it, recoiled at the smell and put it back on the shelf..... I will get it out again if it gets bad and use with a peg on my nose!!

Oh, if your DD gets nappy rash you will be very welcome of the metanium! It's wondrous stuff.

Just wanted to add that I leave my DS in a bamboozle nappy from 7pm till 7am too unless I suspect its dirty. I got a fleece topped booster from the nappylady website which does a good job of keeping his bum dry.

If you really want to change her though, have you tried doing it before the feed? So even if the change wakes her up, she'll chill out again whilst being fed.
But if it's not waking her up then it's probably not making her uncomfortable so I wouldn't bother.

At that age DS was pooing during first boob so changing wasn't an option. As he stopped pooing, wet nappies got (get) changed before a feed. He was reverse cycling (bottle refuser) and needed four changes a night. We both got really good at changing nappies in our sleep. I personally think it's disgusting to leave a child in a puddle of wee -- wouldn't want it for myself, won't do it to my child.

bitofasnowqueen · 22/12/2008 13:38

I think its disgusting to leave a child in a puddle of wee too. But I dont think that an absorbant nappy with a stay dry layer is in anyway comparable to a puddle of wee .
