What do you call genitals?

DS1 is 2, and we're ok with boys, I think - winkle & testicles.

Have just had a girl, and have been winging it by saying that Mummy & DD have no winkle & testicles. What do we call lady bits that is appropriate for a child to say, and not ridiculous when they grow up?!

I've found I simply cannot say vulva to DD when we are in a public loo.

Really, I can only say "wipe your front bottom"

We use willy/winkie for ds. When he's asked about his baby sisters bits in the past we've just referred to them as her 'bits'. Not much thought went into that!

Bit of an aside, but back in the day at school our teacher asked if anyone knew what came out of a volcano. My friend enthusiastically shouted out 'vulva'!

thumbElf · 15/12/2008 22:48

at Lynette and plucky!
Actually, while reading Lynette's post, it crossed my mind that it wouldn't take much for a child to confuse the words vulva and Volvo - and this led to the scenario of a child saying "My Daddy drives a vulva" in quite a loud voice;
or alternatively - "I have a Volvo in my pants!"
Simple things...

It is so annoying that there isn't a word that is most commonly used for girls parts. Boys are so easy as Willy is so common and accepted, but nothing for girls . I always read these threads but have still not found anything I would want my DC to use.

bollockbrainASSofBETHLEHEM · 17/12/2008 11:44

absolutely PMSL at the GP whose patients at the start of this thread come in with problems with thier 'fairy' or 'foo foo'

I would have just died laughing on the spot if i had been you

Fanny for girls bits and Willy for boys, Ds ia 2 and knows he has a willy but insists I have too. Just can't bring myself to explain Fanny to a 2 year old so we all have willies at the moment

What always bugs me about this whole 'debate' is the lack of commonly used, relatively inoffensive euphansims for women's when there are plenty for men's... willy, winkle etc... what's the female equivalent, as widely used, I mean? Why are women's bits so unmentionable that none have evolved? That so many families resort to making up their own?

And why, when it comes to swear words, is the word for women's bits one of the rudest words there is when the male equivalents really don't seem to have the same power to offend? Sorry, feminist rant over. I do feel quite strongly irked about this though.

Luckily, with two boys, I've so far managed to avoid the personalisation of the political on this one.

Which is just as well when I grew up with our lovely family word for the unmentionables which was, I'm not kidding, 'tweenies'.

Iklboo · 17/12/2008 13:39

I have a twinkle
Daddy & DS have a winky (cos it's got one eye)

thumbElf · 17/12/2008 16:44

tweenies as in beTWEEN the legs? I like that, actually!! tricky with the current children's programme of the same name of course ...

duchesss · 17/12/2008 19:35

I know, Jake, Milo, Bella and whatsername have always made me feel strangely squirmy and uncomfortable

Mumlikeu · 17/12/2008 21:10

DS 6 he knew from early daddy has a willy and mummy has a virgina. And babies come from mummies and they are made by mummy and daddy making love. I just dont get why we make up special names for stuff which they will later on learn from soneone else.
LOL And that Santa isnt real.
