I took DD (11 months old) to brantano's to be measured for some sort of shoes so she can walk around outside as she LOVES it but no shoes will fit her (she keeps her heel up all the time) - we tried prewalkers, walkers etc etc

She's not walking properly yet just cruising and walking while you hold her hand etc.
I let her walk from the car to my nans front door whcih is approx 5 meters and she was giggling the whole way but I can't do that if its raining or something cos all I can put on her feet are tights....

Someone have ANY ideas please?

If she's not weight bearing on her whole foot yet, then she isn't ready for proper, hard shoes.

Let her walk around inside as much as you can, and see if Clarkes have some cruising shoes that she could try.

Other than that, just wait, it won't be long now...

(sorry, not too helpful I don't think )

luckylady74 · 12/12/2008 22:25

You can get soft waterproof booties type things from jojo bebe maman and the like for prewalkers who likw to go outside.

DoNotsAntlers · 12/12/2008 22:27

Personally I wouldn't put any shoes on her until she has been walking unaided for at least 6 weeks. A child needs to be walking properly so that there foot flattens. Shoes at this stage (no matter how short a time she is wearing them) could potentially damage her feet.

She may enjoy it - but it won't actually do her any harm to practise her walking indoors for the time being.

Sorry if that is not what you wanted to hear.

Those are one of the types they tried at brantano lucky....

I spose I'm going to have to make do but she LOVES it and I feel i'm being a little cruel - esp cos our house doesn't have much floor space for her to walk about in.

AaliyahsFirstXmas · 12/12/2008 22:28

donots - is there anyway I can make indoors more enjoyable for her then?

We have a walker for her but the room is not big enough at all.... we go to a soft play where she can do it but not often enough.

OP posts:
MistleSQUONKandWine · 12/12/2008 22:29

nah, you're not being cruel.

Honestly, just try and be patient, she'll be there soon enough. They all go through that "nearly there" stage and we all think that if we could just get them the proper shoes, we'd be helping them out so much. But we wouldn't really.

I know I sound like a patronising cow, but I don't mean to.
xx

AaliyahsFirstXmas · 12/12/2008 22:31

Mistle - I honestly dont mind if you are a patronising cow you prob know more than me so I dont mind at all!!

Just wish I could help her abit more... I know I know, let her do her own pace but I can't help myself.

Afc (Lucky) - do you have anywhere nearby that has bigger floor space ie library? She might like walking there..yes tights might get a bit mucky but not wet iyswim, then you can just wash them when you get home.

DoNotsAntlers · 12/12/2008 22:35

Can you set teh furniture up so she can (safely) cruise from one item to the next - with "one step" gaps to navigate?

You "walking" with her lots to get from 1 room to another will help.

As Squonk says...they all go through the nearly there stage and as parents (especially the first time) you so desperately want to skip the nearly there stage and be "there".

It will come. She is learning all the time - and it doesn't have to be outside - in fact (no matter how small your space is - small could actually be better for independant cruising) indoors is probably easier for her as she doesn't have chunky coats and outdoor coats on.

She will get there...and then 6m down the line you won't even remeber this stage. I know I don't!

AaliyahsFirstXmas · 12/12/2008 22:36

MUCKY I DO NOT MIND!! lol... Just can't cope with wet and then cold feet.

The only place I know of with floor space is the soft play but its expensive and there's too many kids who run around like hooligans (as I expect DD will do when she can so am not being moody about it) so I can't let her just play... if you know what I mean.

I dont want to force her to do it if she's not ready - ie: holding her up and making her walk. but I want her to be able to practise if she wants.

my dd is walking for 5 months now but because of her size i cant get shoes to fit her only prewalkers/cruisers which they told me arent suitable because shes walking and the support isnt enough in them so now she is supposed to wait until her feet grow big enough as they wouldntsell me prewalkers! I ended up getting squeeky shoes on the www and putting insoles in them. Let her go barefoot or tights atm you will be suprised in 2 months how she flies around! sorry if typos feeding monkey atm and lights dim

DoNotsAntlers · 12/12/2008 22:51

soremummy - I refused to buy anything other than "prewalkers" until they could not provide them in her size. (actually I didn't really have to refuse - no-one said anything. Theyu always offered leather shoes but I chose the prewakers) She was almost 2 at that point and had been walking nearly a year.

The only reason they don't want to sell you pre-walkers is that they are half the price

AaliyahsFirstXmas · 12/12/2008 22:52

Thats disguisting!! I can't believe that!

Thanks all, I know I need to have more patience and its not that I want her to be walking but she enjoyed it so much and I want to make her happy.

might try a different shop then thanks for that she measure just under a 2 e so thats what they have aprob with but i might just stick with a couple of pairs if the lovely soft leather squeaky shoes with insoles at least i know where she has ran off to! lol also at £11 a pair i can get 2 pairs in diff colours for same price as their prewalkers

DoNotsAntlers · 12/12/2008 22:56

Oh and if you have room to walk in your house - so does she...just let her practice whe you can from 1 room to the next...

soremummy · 12/12/2008 23:00

check this video out on their site this was like my dd about 15 mins ago here

AaliyahsFirstXmas · 12/12/2008 23:01

Oh they are sooo cool!! I think DD will have to have a pair of those when she's ready!!

OP posts:
soremummy · 12/12/2008 23:02

if it doesnt work got to this site and select the squeaky video option on it shoes just got her off so night to you all

soremummy · 12/12/2008 23:04

lol we have 2 pairs but prob is now she loves them and likes to dance/bounce in them can get a bit annoying at times

Myrrhcy · 12/12/2008 23:04

If you are really desparate I can a mum whose dd was born prematurely and with health probs but was walking at her 'born' age.

They had to have her shoes hand made for a year or so. I don't see her very often but I can try to find out which company she used.

Brangelina · 12/12/2008 23:12

Get her some of these for walking about in play centres and the like. DD used these at nursery. Alternatively get some non slip socks to put on over her tights. That way you won't get her tights dirty. Try and delay proper shoes for as long as possible, the human foot was made for walking barefoot and God knows they cost enough!

stealthsquiggle · 12/12/2008 23:24

It will happen in time - if she wants to walk outside try muddy puddles for waterproof bootees. Otherwise grippy socks (gap et al).

It's a lousy time of year to learn to walk - in summer you can leave them in socks/ bare feet for a lot longer.

It's hard to visualise but in a few months you will be feeling nostalgic about the time when you didn't have to constantly chase her around

Gingemejinglybells · 13/12/2008 08:33

I have always used Shoo shoos from Mothercare at this stage. They are lovely and soft leather but the soles are tough enough to 'walk' a little bit outside. They arw washable too. Lots of different styles and colours

heather1980 · 13/12/2008 08:49

MY DD has squeaky shoes and she love them! she's 2 and loves to dance and jump in them. they are designed to squeak when they are walking properly. if they don't make a noise then they are not walking right, so they encourage proper foot placement in walking.

i remember being desparate for my dd to walk so i could buy her shoes, now i wish she didn't coz they cost me £30 every 3 months or so!
