DS has terrible nappy rash for the first time ever. He is 8 months and I'm changing him every 2.5 - 3 hours or so because he is pooing each time. He was screaming and clenching this evening when I was cleaning him . I let him go nappy free for about 10 minutes and will continue this during the day. We use washables but as I say this has never before been an issue. He is also teething. Please help, what can I put on it, has anyone any tips?

Coat him in Bepanthan at every change. Worked for me!
Hope he's better soon.

Leave his nappy off altogether. Needs to be for much longer than 10 minutes I'm afraid.

Use either Sudacrem or my preference is Elizabeth Arden's 8 hour cream, which is fabulous on sore bums.

Check his diet too. Ds2 only ever gets a red bot and cries at a change if he eats kiwi fruit.

Oh thanks Mint, is this something most chemists stock?

Yes storky, might revert to the bland diet approach. I've got sudacrem. Sorry for being silly but what should I do if I leave his nappy off, plonk him on a towel?

Hi - same thing happened to my DS this week. I mentioned it to the nurse when was at practice for something else and she gave me a prescription for canestan as she said it was a fungal rash caused by teething........ it has cleared it up nicely - although I hate using stuff like that. I had been using camomile tea on it and she said that would do the same thing but take longer.

I use Calendula cream with some lavender oil mixed in; or my nipple balm which is made with calendula, beeswax and chamomile with the lavender oil mixed in. Works like a charm.
Lavender oil is safe to put on the skin, it is excellent for scalds and burns (effectively what nappy rash is in this case) and helps skin heal quickly. But I prefer not to use it neat on a baby, so mix it with some form of cream or oil first.

well I'm afraid in the sorky house we have to mop up wherever they go. If he's not fully on the move I would pop him on top of a towel.

Generally you get some warning at 8 months, the bright red faces, funny little grunts etc

longlegted · 11/12/2008 23:15

You could try using bapanthen. I thinks it's amazing stuff. I've only used it when the rash was really bad, it dries up the sores. If it continues it would be worth checking with a nurse incase it is fungal.

Hope it clears up soon.

Madame Cheese... nothing in my book has worked as well as Metacam... ever. If you get it quick it takes 1 application

MadameCheese · 11/12/2008 23:23

My cupboard will be full of lotions for sore bots

As I was drifting off to sleep last night, I realised I had advised you to apply a vetinary pain killer (the same one I give my dog twice a day as it happens) to your DS's nether regions. I do apologise... I had meant to say "Metatanium"

bitofasnowqueen · 13/12/2008 15:30

I'd recommend Metanium too. DS has had horrible nappy rash twice when he's been a bit poorly and the Metanium cleared it up really quickly.

Do you use washable wipes? Wipes soaked in camomile tea and honey can be a bit more soothing when cleaning his bum too.

Iloveautumn · 13/12/2008 15:33

Another vote for Metanium - it was recommended to us by the pharmacist and it's ok for use on broken skin. It healed terrible broken nappy rash for ds within a day or so when sudacrem wasn't making any diff at all.

thumbElf · 13/12/2008 18:12

another option for really bad nappy ash with broken skin, which i haven't had to worry about so far, is to paint his bum with fresh egg white - this worked very well for a friend of mine's little boy. Wait for the eggwhite to dry on his skin before putting the clean nappy on.
