What do you do with your newborn on the nursery/school run if you go in the car?

I have a 2.5 year old and a 3 week old baby. I am really not sure how to do the nursery run for DS1 in the car (at the moment, I am walking but if it is raining etc, I will have to take the car - plus DS1 is being an awkward little thing about the pram at the moment so the car is the easier option).

The car park for the nursery is literally outside the door - would it be safe to leave the baby in the car (locked of course) for the 2 minutes I am inside sorting DS1 out?? Is this any different to leaving them in the car when you are paying for petrol?

All my friends seem to handle it really easily but DS1 is a 'runner' (whereas my friends toddlers aren't) so I can't trust him to stay by my side whilst I get the baby out of the car and the nursery car park is open and straight onto a busy main road so the whole logistics of it is making my head spin tbh.

Any help/advice would be appreciated.

Not very popular on here I know but could DS1 wear reinds?

chequersandroastedchestnuts · 11/12/2008 09:25

reins, sorry.

Get the baby out of the car first!

Have baby in sling or in pram then remove toddler.

Or leave baby in car.

We do use reins but again, DS1 not keen on them (tbh, he is still going through the 'adjustment' of his brother appearing so we are trying to cut him some slack regarding his tantrums!) - plus not sure I could push the pram and hold the reins at the same time (is there a knack to it??)

i was thinking leave baby in car seat and ds1 on reins if only just outside?

Agree with getting the baby out of the car first, pop the baby in a sling (really worth getting one if you have a runner as I did too) and then get your DS out.
The Huggababy is easy to use, you just slide the baby in, easier than the Baby Bjorn types and more comfy for the baby too.

As in, carry car seat in one hand and hold reins (or DS hand?) in the other?

My car seat is quite heavy though...

Pannacotta · 11/12/2008 09:36

Oh and try a double buggy and/or a buggy board if you need to walk, this was what we did keep DS1 in check - he was also 2.5 when DS2 was born and prone to strops and running off.

Chequers - sorry I misunderstood what you meant - blame the lack of sleep!! Do you mean leave the baby in the car seat but take it out of the car and carry it in whilst having DS1 on reins using the other hand?

I quite like the sling idea - hadn't even thought about that. So I could put the sling on before I leave the house and then pop the baby in once I get to nursery?? Will check out the Huggababy sling in a mo although we do have a Baby Bjorn sling from DS1 in the loft and not sure we can afford to buy another one.

X-posts Chequers!

Pannacotta - we have a P&T but DS1 doesn't seem to like it (he keeps asking for his old single pram - as I said, he is not adjusting too well at the mo and I think that is a symptom of it!)

Am thinking the sling idea might work with walking aswell - I could put the baby in the sling and push DS1 in his old pram - certainly got to be easier than this morning when DS1 sulked all the way there as he didn't want to go in the P&T!

There must be a knack to the prampushing and holding onto toddler: dd's CM used to have a pram/buggy and at least 2 los walking.

Defo agree with sling on the school run whether by car or walking. I put the sling on half an hour before we need to leave and so dd is asleep then I have 2 hands free for my 2 ds's (4 and 2). Easier to walk everytime then than bother with the car though.

sjcmum · 11/12/2008 10:30

If it is literally 2 mins, the car is locked, and you can see the car from the nusery, why not leave the baby in the car. Would give you a lot less stress and allow you to focus on your son for a few minutes. Might be controversial for some people - but surely there is a danger of being paranoid - after all what could happen to the baby?? Especially if it asleep. Failing that - I would just take baby in in the carseat, and then at least one less bit of paraphenalia to worry about. If walking works better though - sounds like that is still the best option for you.

I always leave DS, who is now 3 months, in the car when I drop off and pick up DD (2)from nursery. There is a small car park next and I'm only gone five minutes and he's usually asleep anyway. Steep steps to entrance and DD usually needs help, tried it once with DS over shoulder and it was dangerous, frankly, esp having to put him back in his seat while she stood next to car with main road traffic and cars coming in and out of car park.

Wear a sling. Arrive at nursery, pop baby into it, then get DS out of car, hold hand into nursery.
