Where do I go from here with potty training?

DD tells me about nappy changes - either impending or after the event (she used to say quite a long time in advance with poos, but now it's usually afterwards). Wees - sometimes before, sometimes afterwards. She puts nappies on her dollies, or puts them on the potty and then announces what they've done.

She's fond of her potty, talks about it and likes to go and sit on it once or twice a day and hang out and play with Duplo for 1/2 an hour or more. But whenever she actually wants to do something, she says in a rather panicky way, 'Nappy change! Nappy change!' and gets up. I tell her it's OK to do it on the potty, you could do a poo on the potty! wow! but no.

Where do we go from here? Continue to hang out on the potty until she changes her mind? I don't want to put her off, and I'm worried that I may be doing so already (q.v. the fact that she no longer announces poos in advance).

Thanks! (also, when do we introduce pull-ups?)

Do you have any area that is non carpeted? If so i would just have some nappy free time in this room with the potty near by. If your house is warm enough leave pants and trousers/skirt off. Don't make a big deal of it, if she wees on the floor then say "this should be in the potty shouldn't it?" if she wees in the potty then say "well done darling". Important thing is not to enable her to use the potty when she wants to + to get her used to the sensation of peeing without a nappy on. Just do this for a hour or so a day until she gets the idea. you can then start training proper

meant "to enable her" not "not to enable her"
obviously

I do same as spinspin, only younger, between 18 months and 2 years. I have four children and all are trained by 24 months.

It took a few days max, of accidents. I don't use pull ups either.

With all 3 dc I have gone for the bottomless in the house for a couple of days with lots of praise for sitting on potty then choc button for doing something on the potty. I then put knickers/undies into the mix for a day or so then addtrousers so within 5 days or they are generally okwith potty/toilet.
Ds was 2,2yrs,dd1 was 24mths and dd2 was 18/19mths

Nemostwonderfultimeoftheyear · 12/12/2008 10:28

oh and also dont use pull ups but just put dd1 in a night time pull up as she is 23mths and likes to be able to go but isnt dry of a night yet

Thanks, everybody. WWATT, we don't have any carpets apart from a rug in the sitting room that we'd been planning to roll up anyway. I think that is probably the next step.

I'd like to try no trousers, unless she gets too cold. I'd been hoping to wait until summer (she's 21 months, so there's lots of
time) but she seems ready already. I'm kind of reluctant to turn up the heating to the max, because it makes the house really dry (we live in the Czech Republic, and the climate is drier than in the UK anyway). It's not as if it's freezing in the house, though - maybe she'll be fine bottomless as long as she's warm enough on top.

I know I won't get through this without doing a lot of washing - unfortunately DD's poos are nearly always pretty loose Still, at least she never does them when on the sofa (in her nappy I mean) - she prefers standing up.

Thanks - you've persuaded me that it's worth taking the next step soonish.
