If you conceived your first child with the help of Clomid, did you need Clomid again

to conceive your second or did it happen naturally? How long did it take to conceive DC2?

I have PCOS and needed Clomid to conceive DD. I was very lucky and fell pregnant during my first treatment cycle. DD is 5 months and I'm nearly 37 so I'm beginning to think about the timing of DC2.

I realise I will probably need treatment again and wonder what the likliehood is of it working quickly for a second time. DH and I are not using any contraception as seems little point since I am diagnosed infertile but the hope is that we manage a second pregnancy naturally.

Please share your stories if you feel like it.

I posted this thread on Conception but it hasn't been picked up there so thought I'd try a busier board.

I didn't take Clomid and I don't have a second yet, but Jools Oliver got pregnant with her DD2 by accident without Clomid after taking it for the first!

I didn't either but my friend got pregnant with twins while taking Clomid and then had a 'surprise'. She was delighted.

She took it beacause of repeat miscarriages.

Good luck!

I took Metformin instead of Clomid and got pg first cycle

Then got pg accidentally with ds2 just before ds1 was 1!

Good luck!

No I didn't. Not at all. I got pg 5 months after ds1 was born, not intentionally. We'd only had sex about 4 times after ds1's birth too (ds1 was an em cs; there was lots of stuff going on in my life apart from ds1 to deal with, so we...erm... took our eye off the ball, once and kazam). I was just turned 40 at the time too.

I took Clomid because of irregular ovulation rather than PCOS though, so it may be that having the baby just sort of kicked things into place, as I've been much more regular since then.

Ah, me n Jools both then

I took Clomid for my first. It took 7 cycles and 2 miscarriages to succeed.

For my 2nd dc, I took Clomid again and conceived on the 1st cycle. Pg progressed normally.

The problems for which I took Clomid in the first place seemed to resolve after the 2nd birth (no ovulation, no periods), so perhaps if we'd tried for long enough, we might have conceived naturally, who knows? However, there was already a 4.5 yr gap, so didn't want to leave it to chance.

Bloody ironic really, I was diagnosed as having had a premature menopause at the age of 27 and now I have raging signs of ovultion and the periods from hell and there is no way I want any more babies !!

Good luck with ttc btw

Oh and I had PCOS and now have regular (32 day) cycles

stressedmum2 · 22/12/2008 21:43

I was the same told I wouldn't get pregnant without help due to PCOS so had DD now 3 with clomid then when we were just thinking about going back for drugs again for 2nd child found out was already pregnant DS now 11 months will definately not be going without contraception again thinking I will not be able to get pregnant naturally as it happened.I also lost quite alot of weight before I fell so don't know if this helped with it.

Hi Benji, I took clomid with my DS1, got pg on the first try. We had been trying before for 3 years and had a miscarriage during this time. Once DS was born, decided to leave things to chance as had so many problems before. My DS was 14 weeks old when i found out about DD1! She was born 3 days before his 1st birthday. We then had a coil fitted but it didn't suit so i had it removed and there was DD2! So yes it all seemed to be kicked started after the first! I was diagnised with PCOS, since having my Dd2, i have taken both the POP and combined pill as there was no way i could get pg again. The problem is i am now aware of how terrible i feel due to messing around with my hormones and have stopped using these contraceptives as all my PCOS symptoms have returned! Good luck with your family planning! x

I also have PCOS - DD1 was unplanned and without help, DD2 took one cycle of Clomid, DD3 was without help (although I lost nearly a stone in the year or so we were trying, which I think helped). I'm now at my heaviest non-pregnant weight and havign regular cycles .
I'm interested though, have you been "diagnosed infertile" because of the PCOS, or because of something else? Only PCOS doesn't normally in itself cause "total infertility" - you'd normally expect to have incredibly severe untreated symptoms before you'd be properly infertile, rather than needing varying levels of intervention, but stil able to get pregnant.

llareggub · 27/12/2008 22:45

I have PCOS, and needed quite a bit of fertility treatment to conceive DS. I take metformin anyway whether I'm TTC or not, but suspected it would be as hard to conceive child number 2 as it was number 1.

As it turned out, I got pregnant very easily second time around, but sadly miscarried in the first few weeks. Conceived again next cycle and miscarried again. Conceived again in the next cycle, and am now 21 weeks. So I think I can safely say my fertility issues have resolved themselves.

I needed Clomid 1st time round (8 years ttc), and now have a lovely son. We are quite shocked to have had a positive test this week entirely naturally, after only 2 months trying!! (and I'm 37..) So for me the answer is no, it looks like I don't need it again! (Our original diagnosis was 'unexplained')

I'd been wondering the same thing as you Benjy; have you asked your previous specialist whether its possible to find out whether you need Clomid again? (I didn't get round to going back to mine, so I've no idea I'm afraid). Wishing you all the very best xx
