Help please! DD leaking overnight (in disposables) - should I try cloth?

DD is ten weeks and I think may be what is known as a heavy wetter (though PFB so nothing to compare her to). She's in cloth during the day but disposables at night because she tends to feel uncomfortable in wet cloth and scream, whereas she doesn't notice in a disposable, and given the choice between DD being comfortable and me sleeping and DD being uncomfortable and me not sleeping, I've gone for the former Having said that, twice now there's been a break-down in communication and she's gone to bed in cloth and no one's noticed until the morning - but during the day we need to change her very frequently because she seems to get wet fast.

Currently using Sainsbury's eco disposables, which are a bit crappy but were getting the job done. We've now had three or four nights out of the last five or so where she's woken up with wet clothes, so they clearly aren't cutting the mustard any more.

Just seen on another thread that putting a wrap over the disposable might work, so will try that. Other alternatives are use a non-eco disposable (I know that they don't break down in landfill but still feel they're better than normal disposables) or try cloth. I'm worried that cloth will be a bit bulky on her though. Any advice?

Cloth we could try are: eco Bumble, Mothersease BTP (not tried these during day yet as they look too big), Sandys, Tots Bots cotton, Lollipop fleece and bamboo, one Lollipop (I think) pocket, prefolds. Think that's it! Assume I'd have to pad a lot but most of them already look quite bulky - what adds the most absorbency for the least bulk?

TIA

The eco bumble would work if stuffed well with hemp inserts for slimness, or using your prefolds if you don't want any more expense. I use Ellas House bumhuggers at night or Tots Flexitots.

If she doesn't like the wet against her skin have you tried a fleece liner. the fleece has a stay dry effect against the skin?

I tried the sainsbury's eco nappies and thought they were rubbish as well...the outer cover had started to come apart by morning. Currently using Nature Baby ones instead and have tried Bambo bamboo ones (ordered online) which were good.

I have been using cloth at night with no probs. I have baby beehinds hemp which are great. Ellas house bumgugger also good.
Bulkiness at night doesn't really matter imo. The bamboo will be more absorbent than cotton, and you use aprefold as a booster pad.

Which wraps are you using? Motherease are by far the best - they g=have never leaked for me.

ME wraps on advice of MN

Maybe we should give the Bumbles a go tonight and see how we get on. Will have a look for cheap hemp too - ta

WHen I used disposables I used Tescos own and hardly ever had leaks. We are now using tots bots with a motherease airfolw wrap at night and it seems a pretty unbeatable mix- the tots bots wraps aren't up to the night shift but motherease have been fab.

DD1 was in cloth during the day no probs, but was always wet in the night no matter how many booster thingies I used. I swapped to using moltex dutring the night, and they still leaked (although they are by far the most effective of the eco type disposables as they have gel in them. For a while, when she was wetting heavily, the only nappies I found which kep her dry through the night were pampers active in a size bigger than she needed. It seemed ridiculous using cloth during the day and pampers of all things at night, but it worked. Also, the heavy wetting period didn't last all that long.

MinkyBorage · 10/12/2008 16:20

btw I was using motherease cloth nappies

Anglepoise · 10/12/2008 16:31

Good to know the mad peeing will calm down eventually!

We used Moltex originally but ran out of the smaller size and the bigger size are still a bit too big (according to DH anyway, I haven't tried) and then we started getting ones from supermarkets as that seemed easier.

We use cloth at night (have done from about 10days). I find bamboo works best, with a fleece liner on top to keep her drier. We use one bamboo booster & a couple of cotton boosters between the nappy and the fleece liner.

Other way to add absorbancy is to buy microfibre cloths (v cheap at the supermarket) and use those, but make sure you put a fleece liner over the top as they will feel more damp than cotton/bamboo/fleece/etc and microfibre next to the skin can cause dry skin as it pulls the moisture out.
