ds2 is 2 weeks old and ds1 is 2.5yrs, goes to nursery (5 min walk from home) 2 days a week....

we haven't got a double buggy, but thinking of the phil and teds as to keep ds1 out of trouble if i am out and about with both of them on my own(unlikely until new years as dh home until then, plunearer 3!

s weatherwise going out not appealing right now) so would probably more in the spring when ds2 is 3-4 months old and ds1 anyone got similar age difference in children and was a double buggy absolutely neccessary? i'm wondering how much use i would get out of a phil and teds for the cost? ds1 has a maclarens XT which i love for size etc and buggy board...

thanks!

Similar age gap to mine who are now 18months and 3.10. I have a Phil and Teds which we still use for the daily walk to nursery. I didn't get it until DD2 was about 10 months though. Before that I had a maclaren double but it was really hard to push with the weight difference.
Now DD1 walks mostly but will hop into the back seat if she gets tired.

samsonthecat · 05/12/2008 15:08

Oh yes it is fab for days out because I have the paniers which hold loads of stuff so you don't need to carry loads of bags.

They rock as far as I am concerned. I borrowed one from a friend and am so annoyed that I was so tight not to buy one, they have loads on ebay (I am really far too tight to buy a new one, just the thought makes me come out in a cold sweat!) Buggy boards are all well and good but my dd1 was a bugger and refused to get and stay on one, and sometimes when in full tantrum only strapping them in the buggy and striding away will do!

B52s · 05/12/2008 15:09

There will be a 2.2 year age gap between my two DSs, but am not currently planning on getting a double buggy. I / DH will wear a sling for 6 months or so and then we'll reassess. Hoping that DS1 won't need a buggy by then as he'll be in pre-school / with CM / at PIL most of the time. At weekends when we go out as a family me and DH can push a buggy each (we have 3 for some reason).
I don't like the look of the P&T as there doesn't look like much room in either space.

prada · 05/12/2008 15:10

ahhhh thanks honey, i thought of the maclaren double too but worried about the weight distribution and getting in and out of doorways!!

sounds like it was worth the investment for you...

Definatelly worth the money. When I'm done with it I'll sell it on ebay and get some money back. They wear really well and mine still looks good as new.

beforesunrise · 05/12/2008 15:26

2yr3m gap between mine, and i haven't bothered with a double buggy. got by with maclaren techno, buggy board and sling combo and it's worked fine.

there's only been 2 occasions where i wished i had a double, so i am glad i didn't get one

nigglewiggle · 05/12/2008 15:41

Had a similar dilemma and decided to wait and see if I really needed one as they are so expensive. DD2 is now 6 months and I haven't felt the need yet. DD tends to walk most places now and we use a buggy-board when she gets unruly tired.

simpsonsChristmasSpecial · 05/12/2008 22:24

I have 2.5yr gap between my two and have got a double. But not the P & T though

I have a side by side from mothercare which I could not have done without TBH. It was used everyday. But then I don't drive.

Ds is now 3 and DD 10mths and it still gets used about once a week as some of the distances I walk I think are too far for DS.

I do have a buggy board but I find that it hurts my back using it for a long time.

Chandon · 06/12/2008 15:07

I did not get one (there´s 2 years 4 months between my DCs) as a double buggy can really b*gger up your back (!), and can be hard work to manouvre.

I put DS2 in baby bjorn when he was tiny and DS1 in pram for first 6 months. After that my DS1 was 3, and in my opinion it was time for him to get used to walking a bit.

I think those big prams can be more of a bother than a help!

yes, I had a mountain buggy when I had ds2. ds1 was 2 yrs 9 months,
we used it a LOT, I have to admit.
ds1 was in a not wanting to walk anywhere phase and it was a godsend as we do quite a lot of walking, in and out of town and up to nursery and back.

that said, we also used single buggy and sling quite a lot as well.

a friend of mine had a baby at around the same time, and had a similar age gap. she went for single buggy and buggy board. walking down the street one day her 2.5 yr old jumped off the buggy board and ran out into the road
really put me off using one tbh. because she had to run and get the toddler and leave the newborn on a busy pavement by himself

NellyTheElephant · 06/12/2008 21:28

I think it really depends on how well your DS1 walks. I have exactly 2 yrs between my DD1 and DD2 and will have 2 yrs 2 months between DD2 and DS. I didn't buy a double and thought I'd see how it went. I rarely drive and walk and take buses a lot, however, I don't think there was a single time I ever wished I'd had one. I didn't use the buggy board either as it really did my back in so I tried it once or twice and that was it. I've no plans to get a double this time either as DD2 already prefers to walk everywhere and we still have 4 months to go.....

In the early days DD2 went in a sling if I needed DD1 in the buggy for a long distance, but I don't think DD1 ever went in the buggy after about 2.3. DD1 started nursery 5 mornings a week when she was 2 and a half, it's a 10 min walk for me (more like 15 for her in the beginning), but she never had any trouble walking it.

Why don't you wait and see whether you feel the need for it once your DH isn't around so much in the new year - after all it doesn't take long to go out and get one if you do find you need it, but it's a pain to spend money in advance on something you then hardly use.

JumpingJellyfish · 06/12/2008 21:30

2.2yrs between my two. Haven't used a double buggy once- in the early days just relied on sling and normal single buggy (or trike or god DS to walk if fairly short distances). Then once DD turned 6 months she went into a backpack and we mainly used the trike or DS walked. Now if we are shopping DD (17 months) goes in buggy and DS (3.7 yrs) walks. I'm lucky that DS has always loved walking and that we don't generally walk really long distances.

sweetkitty · 06/12/2008 21:33

I have 2.5 years between DD2 and 3 and have a P&T and love it. I love the fact I have one pram that I can use as a double or a single depending on where we are going, I also have 4yo DD1 so didn't really want 2 walking toddlers and a pram to push so DD2 goes in the P&T. Actually sometimes DD1 will have a rest in it too.

NotanOtter · 06/12/2008 21:36

i have 2.5 between dc5 and 6

phil and teds is godsend

Poledra · 06/12/2008 21:51

I have 2.5 between DD2 and DD3. I have a Graco tandem which I used a lot for DD1 and DD2 (less than 2 year age gap). This time around, I have used it exactly twice . DD2 loves her buggy board as she can hop off and on it at will.

CherryEm1 · 06/12/2008 22:03

if u think u'll need it often the phoenix tandem was only £99 and i found a way to fit my car seat to it for easy transport or if its just occasional two cheapish umbrella buggies can be fitted together with clip connectors think i found them on baby-supplies.co.uk. my phoenix lasted for my first 2 with 20mnth age gap and 18mnth age gap between 2nd and third.

blueshoes · 06/12/2008 22:03

Another vote for the P&T. 3 year age gap.

prada · 07/12/2008 16:19

interesting, thanks for your thoughts ladies.

i agree can pick one up quickly if we want one, so think i'll hold off until new year when dh is back to work and see how we get on in the meantime... d

anyway ds1 wants to walk everywhere lately and going in the buggy or even the car has been a problem with his dad!
