In the night garden in French (dans le jardin des reves)

My daughter (10m) is bilingual English and French and, for reasons I can't quite fathom, seems fascinated by "in the night garden." I've often thought that I wish something similar was available in French ...

Well, ?ve just discovered that ?in the night garden? actually exists in French! It is called ?dans le jardin des reves? and is a BBC-sponsored translation of the original.

However, I?ve looked everywhere (well, on fnac and amazon websites) and it doesn?t seem to be for sale on DVD, except in the original English. Do any MNers know different, or else can they suggest how I might go about getting it recorded and sent to me on disc?

Apparently it?s on French CBeebies (BBC France for children) and/or Gulli. Does anyone receive either of those channels? Is it downloadable via the net? We only have the good but terribly worthy TV5 at home ...

We have Gulli but don't remember coming across this program.

Have you tried Fnac?

Also, in most DVDs you get more than one language. Is it possible that the DVDs you can find in the UK could have French language tracks?

ManIFeelLikeAWoman · 02/12/2008 23:08

Possible, but I would rather someone could tell me for definite before we fork out for said DVDs ... Obviously, we can watch it in English here on TV so don't own them yet.

hmm. Have seen it on on Gulli early afternoons. Which is a strange time as all the children it is aimed at will be sleeping. Check out details of dvd on amazon france. In fact will just do a little check now..

i want to know what pinky ponk and ninky nonk is in french!

farfaraway · 06/12/2008 21:52

no dvds available, only a few books on the amazon site. Nothing on fnac either. Tis a mystery. But I do remember buying teletubbies/maisy dvds and they were available in about 10 languages but there is no language info on amazon UK. Might be worth asking someone to check out the back of the box in the UK.

Am in uk myself - looked yesterday - it only mentioned english ... would it definitely specify if it had french too?

Bump - does anyone know one way or the other if British DVD has a French soundtrack or will I need to wait to buy a French version on hols this year?

I can't really see the point of the night garden in French - unless you are sitting with your DD and talking about the things happening in French too.

There's not a lot of language there.

Why don't you go for something like Maisy instead?

At her age she's a bit young to be getting anything out of it without some adult commentary imo (I have 2 bilingual fr/eng children).

Anna8888 · 15/12/2008 11:31

Agree that Maisy is a better bet. We have all the Maisy DVDs in multiple languages.

ManIFeelLikeAWoman · 15/12/2008 22:39

Fair point - though, yes, I always try and talk to her (in French, of course) about what's going on in what she's watching.

We've got a few other DVDs, too - T'choupi, Petit Ours Brun, Mila raconte 1001 histoires, Barbapapa - I just thought that, seeing that she likes ITNG in English, we might as well capitalise on it.

Same question about Maisy though - does it come in French automatically or do I have to get a specifically French version (presumably from France)?

My mum bought our Maisy DVD and I think it was set up with all the languages but cheaper versions might not have them all.

Best to buy from a shop and check the packaging.

ManIFeelLikeAWoman · 16/12/2008 14:27

Thanks, will do - btw, is the French convincing or does it "feel" translated?

Sorry I haven't watched it in French cos I am in France and insist on as much English as possible.

I know my niece has it in French and they sell the books over here and they are fine.

ManIFeelLikeAWoman · 16/12/2008 14:36

Thanks again - will definitely investigate.

Why not get Maisy/Mimi from your library? That's what we do. If you have got a magnifying glass and a spare half hour, you could check out other children's dvd's as well. (Not much about in my library, but maybe where you live ...)

stephanierothwell · 12/06/2010 11:42

There are quite a few ITNG things in French on Amazon France. I searched for Le Jardin des Reves and came up with two DVDs, and brought up some recommended items -- books, a singing book. Steph

Thanks, will look - though it's been so long coming she may have gone off it by now!
