I know there's a few of you lurking out there and thought we could have a new sparkly thread to coerce encourage us with thesis writing....

I'm in my 6th (or is it 7th) year of a part-time PhD in marine biology- and writing up (though still occassionally dabbling in data analysis which I shouldn't be!! but it's always more interesting than writing...). Hoping to submit 1st May 2009. have to really for my sanity and that of my long-suffering DH & DCs. Need to finish my first draft by end of January I reckon to give me time to make corrections etc.

But I am having long periods of self doubt and general procrastination so could do with some motivational support from anyone going through similar (Acinonyx for example?! ps. I've name-changed from madmarriedNika )

Thank you

Am still in shock really. Am amazed I managed to submit let alone pass.

I've got 12 weeks to do the corrections but pretty straight forward. I havent managed to celebrate properly yet as am pregnant (17 weeks) and still very very sick. Major achievement of the day was not actually being sick on the examiners

many congrats. it would be an interesting research study to see how many mumsnetters get a pass with minor corrections compared to others wouldn't it

Celebrate, write the corrections and enjoy!!!

Can i shuffle onto this thread to mark my place?

I'm a first year PhD - so feel a little intimidated by all you people who've, y'know, done something that you can now write up!

Interested in this thread?

kif · 19/03/2010 20:46

I'm in Biomedical Science.

What's everyone else doing?

whiteflame · 21/03/2010 06:18

that sounds interesting kif, my undergrad was in biomed (postgrad genetics). are you based in the uk?

kif · 22/03/2010 05:22

It is interesting! I'm based in London.

What are you working in?

peppapighastakenovermylife · 07/04/2010 13:24

Mine was all about breasts

Don't be intimidated - be encouraged that loads of us have actually managed to pass

Are you lab based?

Guitargirl · 16/04/2010 21:25

Hello. Can I join you guys please? Am in my 4th year of a part-time PhD. I also work full-time as a researcher and have 2 DCs, aged 3.3 and 1.3. Have taken mat leave x 2 from my studies so the earliest I can submit is summer 2012.

kif · 28/04/2010 13:07

Come in Guitar girl - wow you sound busy! Are you working and studying in the same place?

I'm not lab based. As my lab based friends point out - experiments have no respect for the school run .

My 'lab' is inside my laptop, which seems to be constatly on my back - turtle stylee.

Hi, no my job and PhD are not connected - I couldn't even make that easier for myself!

I actually started the PhD when I was in my last job. I found the job boring and it didn't take up much 'brain space' so started studying so that I would feel as though I was achieving something.

But then I found a new job around the same time as I registered for the PhD and then 6 months later I became pregnant with DD and then 2 years after that with DS so it's all go now!!

Luckily my work is very flexible and I have a certain amount of freedom with that so I can fit in interviews and some visits during office hours. But then it does mean that I work every night after the DCs are asleep.

Am also based in London.

Am very of those of you who have finished or nearly there!
