What age should you 'attempt' potty training?

My daughter is 16 months, wears Bumgenius in the day and disposable overnight. However she wears disposables at the childminders (2 to 3 days a week) as the CM wasn't happy with real nappies (I know!!)

Some of my friends with babies around the same age give or take a few weeks have started sitting their little ones on the potty? I can tell when she is have a poo, but not a wee, is it too early to start and how on earth do you go about it, as I haven't got a clue!

Can anyone recommend any books, or tips on how to tell when she might be ready, I'm really not bothered whether she does or doesn't but don't want to miss the opportunity if its there?

I know perhaps that's what people did in the olden days but I think 16 months is very young.

Maybe buy a potty and start talking about it but I personally wouldn't take it any further. Don't get involved in the competition.

Wait for her to tell you she needs a wee

Then try

You might be waiting A LONG TIME if you take this approach though

No harm at all in putting her on the potty too. We started at 14 months and were clean/dry during the day by 18 months. We started out with just first thing in the morning. He started asking to use it a week or so later (with a point/grunt or going to the bathroom if asked if he needed to wee), but not every time of course. He was poo trained by 15 or 16 months.
