Lie down car seat

Sadly not for me as no baba yet, but a friend is planning on buying a 'carry cot' car seat.

Example at Mothercare

I didn't even know you get them but it got me pondering. The one she's getting (not sure if it's the exact model I've linked to) has an internal harness and fits onto one of those isofix (?) bases you can fit into cars.

What do more experienced parents think? Could this be a good idea? (ignoring the hefty price tag ).

The idea of having baba lying flat appeals to me but kinda like the idea of baba being able to see out from a seat. Pointless worrying at this point but takes my mind off ttc

Bear in mind baba can't see much at all though in a first seat, as they are rear facing and stuck in the back of the car!

They are good, tho the Jane one can also be used in the traditional shape from 6m so more versatile.

I had a lie-flat seat for dd and ds1 (couldn't use it for ds2 as it took up 2 seats).

They can probably see more - they're looking up, they can see out of the window at the trees etc. Although to start with they can't actually focus that far so its irrelevant. And they fall asleep once the car starts moving.

But does it convert to a sitting-up one at some point? Cos the next stage of carseat is from 9 months, and I think an 8mo would maybe not like being flat all the time. And might not fit.

The Jane one is really good, a friend has one, but you can't use it lying flat with another car seat in the car (takes two seat belts), so no good if you have or are planning to have more than one child.

MatNanPlus · 26/11/2008 20:07

BeesMummy you use the middle and an outside belt, so the other outside belt is available, that is if your back seat is big enough!

Thanks for all the info, will pass on the details of the Jane one in case Lu doesn't know about that model.

Think I'll also add the idea to my future wish list when it's our time for baba shopping

Jane got a shocking review from Which? However the last set of child carseat reviews they did, they actually recommended a lie-flat one for the first time. Back in a mo, will go and look up which it was.

DontCallMeBaby · 26/11/2008 21:50

Aha, the one that got a good review is the Britax one you linked to! It scored 77%, with the 'cons' being that it does only lie flat, and it only goes up to 10kg (vs 13kg for conventional baby seats). Jane Matrix (the convertible one) scored 38% when it was reviewed. Cons were that it was complicated to fit, and thus very easy to fit incorrectly and unsafely. It wasn't reviewed in the most recent round.

I work in vehicle safety and not heard good things about lie flat seats, none of the car manufacturers test child or rear restraints with the lie flat seat, it also has very poor child kinematics compared to the rear facing seats (increased risk of injury) the only advantage IMO is baby comfort and safety shouldn't be comprised - there was a good video of one in a crash test on you tube I'll see if I can find it...

insywinsyspider · 26/11/2008 22:38

this is it would put me off getting one

Thanks for the extra stuff DCMB and iws, some food for thought there.

Looked at the mama's and papas one for DS but didn't get it as it's didn't fit our car. When DS was 9 weeks old Dh lost control of the car when an animal ran in front. We rolled down a bank and the car ended up the right way up eventually. Luckily we were all fine (good scottish bog cushioned us fantastically) but I still have nightmares thinking of what could have happened if he had been in a carry cot type car seat.

car safetly officer said she would leave her driveway with a baby in one.
