Is 17/18 months too young to come out of the cot?

Ds2 due in feb and basically I don't want to have to shell out for another cot.
Dp wants to buy bunk beds straight away to cut the cost of a toddler bed which I'm ok about as we've got one of those side guard thingies, but is 18m too young to be taken out of cot?

The reason I'm doing it then is so that ds can still go between cot and bed while ds2 is in mosses basket if need be.

I'm prob gonna do it anyway, just wanted to see what everyone thought.

Popping out, so will catch up later

My DS was out of his cot at 13mo and into a toddler bed.

TeenyTinyTorya · 26/11/2008 15:29

All my siblings were in their own beds by 18mths to make way for the new baby. I don't think it's too early, especially with a side guard, just harder because they can climb out!

LouieStrumpet · 26/11/2008 15:31

My ds was in a bed by 16 mo, just with extra blankets on the side in case he fell off.

Yep, all my dcs have been in a normal bed by 14 months and we've never had a guard rail either. I just took them in tight and they learn to stay in.

TeeBee · 26/11/2008 15:43

Both my DS' were out of cots by then. Bed guard works fine.

Guadalupe · 26/11/2008 15:45

Ds2 could climb out by 15/16 months so he went in a toddler bed. We had a gate on the door.

Ds1 was climbing out of his at that age so had to go into a normal bed. We didn't bother with the bed guard. We borrowed one for a couple of nights, but he just climbed around it, so it was more dangerous than not having one.

very interesting - just happened upon this thread, and I'd always just assumed it would be too early, but maybe this is the solution to my similar problem. thanks.

All of my 3 were in a bed by that age. DS1 was 16mo to make way for dd, then dd was about 14mo to make way for ds2. DS2 moved out of the cot and into a double at 15mo because he was such a shocking sleeper I used to spend hours sat by his cot. The double meant I could get into it with him if he wouldn't settle.

Ds1 had a toddler bed but dd went straight into a bottom bunk with side rail.

None of them have ever fallen out of their beds either.

This is good to know. My next dc is due in april and ds will be 21 months. I was going to put him in the bed we've bought him at 18 months so he can get used to it but was worried how he'd be.

mine have been in normal beds by that age.

littleboyblue · 26/11/2008 16:50

Thank you all.
My dad said when ds started walking that he should go in a proper bed but I thought it was way too soon.
Good to have the reassurance though.
hanx again

Mine was in a normal bed by 13 months. He is quite a climber so I felt it was the safest way. We have a stair gate at the top of the stairs, and he comes and wakes us in the morning.

heather1980 · 26/11/2008 17:33

we have a cot bed and the sides came off at 20 months, and she went into a bed at 2 when ds came along and i needed the cot again. she's in a full size single with a guard, a toddler bed is the same size as a cotbed so seemed daft to buy one.

littleboyblue · 26/11/2008 19:17

We bought a 3-in-1 cot, it goes into a bed and then into a sofa. The plan was to take the sides off but not buying another one.
Ds hasn't as yet tried to climb out so I hadn't really thought about it till a few weeks ago.

No problem re 17 /18 month old going into a bed, but I'd be a tiny bit woried about when you are planning to start using the bunk beds. If DS1 goes straight into bottom bunk from cot, then make sure you remove the ladder so he can't climb up and play at the top. But then what happens when DS2 comes out of the cot? Say you were planning on DS2 coming out of cot around the same time (17 /18 months - or even at 2), I don't think bunk beds would be safe to have around...... Even though DS1 would be in the top bunk by then DS2 would be perfectly capable of climbing up to play etc and maybe I'm being overly paranoid, but the idea of a just 2 yr old climbing up and playing at the top (and no doubt falling down!) does make me feel a bit queesy!!

bigbaubleeyes · 26/11/2008 21:38

My DS still has a gate on his door at night as his doorway is still at a right angle to tops of stairs and i worry about hime tumbling - maybe put a gate on is bedroom as a back up.

We are blessed as he rarely wakes up for anything and calls through if he does need to pee, which hes done a handful of times (he is nrly 3).

It seems sensible but i wouldnt give him the option of returning to cot while other still basket - be clear what you expect of him or you could end up playing musical beds

bigbaubleeyes · 26/11/2008 21:39

im tired sorry for appalling sp

MrsGokWan · 26/11/2008 21:47

Nelly we had a high sleeper for my eldest from when he was 3. DC2 started going up it at 2 and DC3 is usually up in it with DC2, who is now 3 and sleeps in it, when I go in in the morning. DC2 is 17 months and has been scooting up the steps since he was 14 months.

littleboyblue · 27/11/2008 08:26

Thanx ladies.
We don't have stairs in our place, so that's not an issue.
Was thinking that when ds2 is out of cot and ds1 on top bunk, I'd take the ladder off through the day and hope he doesn't try to get up in night
Obviously depends on what sort of children my ds's become. My friends ds was in one of those cabin beds at 3, so will just have to see.
Haven't got the room to do anyting else I'm afraid.
Thanx for advive
