Well advice needed please dd is 15 mo we gave her a dummy when she was about 7 weeks old (can't remember why now!).

She only has it going to sleep at nap time and bedtime. It used to be lie down dummy in and asleep in 20 minutes, bliss.

For the last month she has taken to flinging it out of the cot and being inconsolable when it doesn't appear back immeadiately and also when not flinging it in the dummy olympics event, she twiddles and spins it in her mouth for up to two hours some nights she can do this and not go to sleep.

DH wants the dummy gone and thinks this is the signs that she doesn't need it to settle.
Also we are getting very frustrated with the twiddling it appears the dummy is keeping her awake now does that make sense.

Anyone any experience of this? Any advice appreciated.

megcleary · 26/11/2008 08:17

I want to get dummy of ds (same age) I'm waiting until he gets another nasty cold and can't keep it in his mouth. When this happens he sucks on a blanket (gross I know) and then I won't give dummy back.
That's the plan anyway!

Mine won't take the dummy but thankfully she's found her thumb! can anyone tell me what ds and dd is about???

SquiffyHock · 28/11/2008 09:47

Have a look at these Yummmi. DS/D - Dear/Darling son/daughter.

Meg, I agree that she'll forget about it very quickly. Does she use it for sucking at all?

megcleary · 28/11/2008 18:28

she just plays for a while then when tired sucks it and falls asleep squiffy

Try cutting a hole in it - they then don't 'work' so they stop asking for them. We did this with DD and had no tears at all, just left the 'broken' dummy with her for 2 nights then quietly took it away.

megcleary · 28/11/2008 19:54

like that idea SH dh is trying to pop her down now without it lots of tears hers (mine too) i am being sent out by dh and he is popping in evry 1-2 mins to settle her

Before I tell you all this one, let it be known that I think it was an appalling way to take a dummy from a child, but I will never forget the story. I was lining up to pick up ds from nursery (many moons ago) when I heard one of the Mums saying how she had snuck into her ds room in the night, taken his dummy and thrown it away. In the morning she told her ds that " a monster had come in the night and stolen the dummy for himself and was now living up the tree in their back garden. He, apparently, was such a fearsome monster that neither parent would dare to go and get it".

Just thought I'd share

Hi megcleary, hope all is well! Just thought i'd add, my DD is the same age and we took her dummy off her as it seemed to wake her every time it came out! ( every 1/2 hour at the worst) We took it away and left her to cry it was very hard. But if you are consistant she will learn to settle without it. To be honest worrying about taking it away was worse than doing iyswim? She only cried for 3 nights and then was fine! Good luck x

megcleary · 03/12/2008 14:42

well touch all the wooden things KH it seems to have worked after 3 days she lies in her cot with 3 teddies now as opposed to one grizzles a bit but often asleep in minutes and sleeping better no waking looking for dummy

occasional shouts during night but seems grand!!
