My two week old son screams every time we change his nappy - just wondering if he'll ever learn that it has to be done and stop screaming???

Its not bothering me too much but just wondering....

Did your child ever learn this and if so at what age.

Ds2 does this aswell. Ds1 didn't. Got better after 2-3 weeks. Now it is just occassionally, not every time. Don't know why. Just him getting used to it ? I mean lets be honest, if you are all snuggly, noone wants their bottom exposed to the cold air all of a sudden, do they. Sounds nasty to me

throckenholt · 26/11/2008 09:19

yep - it gets better - mine hated nappy changes for the first few weeks - and any other nakedness come to that (not ideal with a puking baby or one with explosive poo that covers all clothes).

LadyBuzz · 26/11/2008 09:25

Both of my DSs were like this (DS2) still is.
He doesn't mind being naked though or fully clothed hejust hates the bits in between. He is starting to get better at 3 weeks like Obs Says, and he sometimes doesn't cry!

DH did a nappy this morning and he didn't cry - first time!! maybe he's learning.

And you're right Obs, it can't be fun having your bits exposed to the cold air!!

All of mine have screamed at nappy naked time!!! It is a good way to get them to wake up though

Have you ever tried, er, wiping yourself with a wet wipe? It's a lot colder than I thought! Apologies if you're already using cotton wool and warm water instead if not, it might help. DD hated changes but settled down after 4-5 weeks IIRC.

MerryMarigold · 26/11/2008 18:45

Ds2 does this, dd is fine though. The warm water and cotton wool is a lot better as well as getting changed near (not too near!) a fan heater as our house is COLD, so not surprised he screams really, but he does tend to 'lose it' whereas dd is chilled out. Ds1 is still in nappies at just past 3 and and still hates nappy changes in winter, but nopt enough to motivate him to get on that potty.

TheProvincialLady · 26/11/2008 18:54

I don't think it is that they learn that nappy changes have to be done and they might as well put up with it - my feeling is more that they get used to the sensations around them, the feeling of being naked in the cooler air, and not being attached to you. Most of 'em seem to get better around the 5-6 week/month/year mark!

Nothing about being 3 and still in nappies Merrygold, he'll do it when he's ready .

I don't think my DD ever cries during a normal nappy change but I always use it as 'nappy-off' time and only ever put it back on once she wants away and starts crying, but she normally manages a good 20 mins before having enough. It's ruddy cold right now though so newborns are going to protest without a doubt.
