Help needed - DS screaming when he has his nappy changed

DS is 14 months old and we are currently having a nightmare when we need to change him. He screams, arches his back, tries to roll off the mat and ends up in floods of tears. I hate having to put him through it. I've tried distraction with toys, singing, tickles etc and nothing seems to work. Please can someone help - I feel like such a bad mother.

When I read the title I thought to myself "Must be about 12 months old". You just have to grit your teeth and get it done as quickly as possible.

Sing! Loud and fast paced songs with occasional tickles and tummy beeps. It might get you through the next three months before the real nappy rebellion starts....

Or the evil mummy technique of pinning them down with your feet and going at lightening speed. (Has to be done sometimes)

Try pull up nappies if you can (.i.e no poo to deal with) - he's probably refusing to lie still at that age. Songs, toys, or asking him to pull the wipes out for me helped distract DS at that age.

Oh you've tried singing (duh) hmm. If all else fails (and by all else of course I mean Chocolate Buttons - the holy grail of toddler compliance) you'll just have to do it with him standing up, not good when there's poo but it's either that or pin him down as I said.

try changing standing up

try pull-ups

try distraction

but it is a phase and they grow out of it

Thanks guys. Unfortunately we use reusables so the pull ups aren't an option. I've tried the standing up option for taking the dirty nappy off but that's a nightmare when it's a poo as he clamps his thighs together so I can't wipe properly and he ends up with nappy rash.

How long does it take them to grow out of it (prays it's soon) ?

try standing up when it is just a wet nappy and then major distraction when it is a dirty one. My DS went through a phase of doing exactly the same but after a couple of weeks of letting him stand most of the time he is now fine to lie down when I really need him to.
