Don't tell him off, don't tell him it's dirty. That's the way to set him up with all kinds of pooing issues.

Maybe he simply doesn't know when he needs a poo? Being ready to be dry doesn't necessarily mean being ready to be clean. If he doesn't recognise the signals, he can't respond to them.

If you think he knows but just doesn't like using the toilet, it might be worth considering letting him have a nappy for a poo.

The other thing that's worth mentioning is that there is a condition called encopresis, where compacted poo causes a form of constipation. Looser poo builds up behind and then oozes past the blockage causing what looks like soiling - but the child can't control it.

Go easy on him. He's very little, and any pressure you put on him now could cause problems for him later.

the thing is he knows when hes doing it

My ds needed a nappy for poos for ages after he was dry. He used to ask for a nappy when he needed to go. I just went with it til he was ready to give up the nappies.

Lots of children have issues with pooing in the toilet - it is incredibly common. Many, many children who are physically ready to use the toilet aren't ready emotionally and refuse point blank to use the toilet.

It won't hurt to tell him that he can have a nappy on when he needs a poo - takes the pressure of him, takes it off you too.

Don't rule out encopresis though.

can i add that my ds had a wheat allergy and so had v loose poos several times a day with virtually no sensation so hence soiling all day. maybe when you but yours on the potty it was more often so you managed to catch the poos but the toilet for wees is no less often! anyway you could try no wheat for a couple of days, i new within 24 hours that was the problem.

I agree it sounds like encopresis. Is it quite runny? sometimes more like a big stain in his pants?

AwayWithTheFaries · 23/11/2008 17:02

no its not runny
