my dd who is 15 mths old got her injections last wed. from thurs she has hardly ate a thing, drinking very little. she has developed a runny nose and a chesty cough from the weekend. i took her gp on mon and she got a good chking over: ears throat and chest and was told everything was clear. She vomited in nursery on tue and then on wed night we noticed her nappies were quite dry and were back at different docs who basically told us the same as before. however she has vomited again and nappies as still quite dry and she is hardly eating or drinking at all.

i dont want to go back to doc again and be told the same thing. has any one experienced this??????

Call out of hours doctor or NHS direct or take her to nearest A&E.

You cannot afford to take chances at this age and these people are paid to be there in situations like this.

Best of luck & hope she is OK.

I think there is a nasty respiratory virus making the rounds around all the kids! My DS has been ill for the last few weeks. Very chesty cough, lots of phlegm, off his food (but still drinking milk), very runny nose (I've got a couple of muslin cloths designated 'swot' cloths!) and vomited a couple of times with mostly phlegm... He's been to two doctors and both said it's a virus going round as his chest and ears are clear. The timing of the injections might be just unlucky? How little is she drinking (is she drinking water?) and how long has this been going on?

How is she in herself? I mean, is she playing etc? My DS when he was really poorly would cry for no reason but would still play and mostly okay through the day. Just a little subdued at times. But if you are worried, you should take her to A&E. Hope she is ok.

It's the not drinking which I find worrying. It doesn't take a lot for a baby to get dehydrated and I would definitely have her checked out tonight if she were mine.

All the best.

x post with OP but that's still not much fluid, is it?

I would always offer juice if my ds's were off their food and poorly, just for the sugar. Although ds2 even turns his nose up at apple juice and would rather drink water.

I would probably get them checked out again, just because of the injections. Has there been any temperature?

mrsmcdreamy · 20/11/2008 21:25

If she's sleeping, I'd def let her sleep, but have a drink on hand if she wakes - something you know she'd enjoy, like apple juice.

moochiemoo · 20/11/2008 21:26

ive been offering her juice and diaorlyte as well but just not interested, no temp.

I think if she's not drinking much of anything and her nappies are dry, then I'd err on the side of caution and take her to a doctor again tomorrow morning. See how she is during the night.

Dehydration is a big concern, and if she's not been drinking anything for a few days, there's definitely cause to seek medical advice again.

mrsmcdreamy · 20/11/2008 21:41

In the meantime, if she wakes in the night, still try to offer her fluids - maybe in her sleepy state she may take more.

Piffle · 20/11/2008 21:48

ds2 19mths has this nasty thing
Vomiting once every night about an hr after bed. After coughing fit.
Ok ish day but low appetite. Lower energy and clingy.
Today had temp no appetite and wheezy
Docs gave him antibiotics
Tis a wicked virus/illness
How much milk is your dd drinking?
I watered down ds2s and offered watered down juice ( he never gets juice usually)
If no wet nappies then docs first thing I advise as dehydration can happen quickly
But if she takes small but regular milk and is ok within herself then you have to sit the bloody thing out.
It ishard with such littlies though.

DoNotAsfinishedXmasshopping · 20/11/2008 21:49

Agree with others. Food is not aproblem.

If I have read this correctly she has had 4-5oz fluid tops today? That is not too great.

When my DD3 did the same (about 120ml day) the Dr punched some numbers into his calculator and then nearly fell off his chair as she this is way below the "minimum daily fluid intake". But somehow she seems to have an amazing tolerance for minimal intake. Some children do - but this is not normal. When my DD was in this position (different cause BTW - ulcers in teh mouth which was not a concern in itself) I took her to the GP daily for a week (and her was happy to see her daily) so he could check her for clinical signs of dehydration. One thing we were able to get into her though which helped was yoghurts....which counts as fluid.

Dry nappies; dry eyes, dry lips, skin that doesn't rebound back instantly if pinched on the back of the hand are all things you can look for - but really you should be getting a professional to check her. When you do take her back focus on the dehydration as a concern...

DoNotAsfinishedXmasshopping · 20/11/2008 21:50

Oh and another tip...she may suck fluid out of a clean wet flannel....

moochiemoo · 21/11/2008 21:26

hi everyone, just thought id let you all know ----well dd slept on and off all night and when she woke she took about 5oz milk but then got really sleepy and slept all morn, so took her to docs anyway and he said that she has a bad respiatory virus, so just have to sit it out, she was not dehydrated just not weeing as much as she wasnt taking much fluid.....thanks for all you advice anyway. just hope the weekend makes a difference in her.
