wind... infacol/colief?

My dd has been struggling with wind for the last few weeks, he is now 6 weeks old. He grunts very loudly from approx 3am, as well as constant crying from 6pm till 11pm. Some days he cries all day and there's nothing i can do to consol him (20hrs last week!!)he is well fed but then doesn't sleep as he is in obvious discomfort pulling legs up etc. He also has hiccups alot and is sick alot. We've tried the usual winding and bicicyle legs etc. and nothing works. I've now been using infacol for every feed for a week and has made no difference so far, how long should this take to work? Also, i realise using colief is quite tricky if bf as you have to express each time.... Would i be able to use in at 7 am feed and night time feed or do you have to use it for every feed fo it to be effective? And can i use it in conjunction with infacol?

am not sure sweetheart as it's been a long time since dd had to use it (she's now 3.5). it does sound like he has colic, although with the throwing up every time, he may have reflux. i don't think you can use the both together, tho things may have changed in three years so i would ask a pharmacist. xxx

I'd speak to pharmacist/doctor - imo infacol has pretty patchy results but I would ahve thought you should have seen results in a week- couple of my friends in similar position to you had no joy with it.

have you tried using a sling - one friend reckoned having her dd upright seemed to help a bit with vomming/crying

I found infocol to be far too strong a taste for ds. We had the exact same problems from when he was 6 weeks old. If he was awake he was screaming. If he is sick with every feed and is in that much pain, I'd say it is reflux.
My gp put him on gaviscon and told me to put that in every milk feed for as long as he's having milk. I did it for about a week but wasn't prepared to do it for years. I was at the doctors twice a week for about 3 weeks until they reffered us to hospital where they agreed it was reflux and ds was put on a special formula (Infamil A.R.) and we saw a vast improvement within 2 weeks.
We had all of that deep grunting too. Crying was also mostly at the same time so thought colic, as also couldn't bring up wind, so switched to dr browns bottles and used dentinox colic drops. Dentinox is the best brand for everything. Teething gel, cradle cap shampoo, everything.

littleboyblue · 20/11/2008 09:59

Yes poopy, it does help. I was told to hold ds upright for 45mins after each feed to encourage milk and acid to stay down. Pain at 3am though!

It sounds like it's reflux from what others have said, but on the off chance it's wind, have you tried gripe water? Some people think it's a big load of sh*te, but we found it worked wonders with getting DS's burps up.

Oh, and HV said to me (she is quite normal, unlike many HVs) that if Infacol hadn't made a difference within 10 days, it probably wouldn't.

littleboyblue · 20/11/2008 16:34

Gripe water's great!!

My son suffered terribly with colic, I tried everything and none of them worked.
The brilliant man that owned my local chemist had a little girl the same age as my Ds, who also suffered with colic, and he recommended Colief, it hadn't been out long then.

It was like a miracle , within 24 hours the colic had gone.

I bottlefed so have no experience of using it whilst breast feeding but have found this on their site

www.colief.com/use.htm

I wouldn't use Colief and infacol together.

Hope that helps

It is hard to know what to advise as there is very little evidence that either of them help at all. A lot of studies suggest that infacol is no better than a placebo - but when it's your child you don't care if it works because it is a placebo - you just want something to work!

It seems that colief may help in a few cases but you don't know before hand if you are one of them or not! I suspect that 'colic' is actually a mixture of problems in most cases - DS definately had reflux that used to make him choke lying down and that was fixed by gaviscon, but the gaviscon seemed to make his tummy ache worse!

Colief is a pain when breast feeding but the main point is to leave it to 'cook' for the 30min before giving it. I used to express a small amount by hand into a feeding cup, add the colief to it and sit it in a bowl of water. At the end of the feed I would give it to him by syringe but you could use the cup if he will take it that way. It worked wonders for us but we did notice if we missed one if we were out.

Whatever is causing it I promise it won't last forever - but it does feel like it!

Thank you all for your messages, that's a big help. Think I will try colief now as the infacol hasn't worked so far. We have been breastfeeding except for 10.30pm feed when he has formula, so last night we tried giving him expressed milk at this time and he seemed alot better in the night. However this could be coincidence, so think we need to do a few nights like this before we can tell properly. Selfishly i hope it's not the fromula that's the problem!! I also took him to a cranial osteopath which after the first visit made no difference, but the last one seemed to really calm him abd for the first time in weeks he didn't cry from 7pm till 11pm!! Who knows though, maybe just a coincidence.....

We had the same with our DS and was advised to use Colief by the GP and have to say it worked wonders and was able to wean him off it when he was about 3 months.

Hope you get this sorted

popsycal · 23/11/2008 09:45

i am using colief while breast feeding
i found it to help a boit where infacol didint
however it hasnt totally stopped and I am owondereing if he has reflux

if you try colief, and are breast feeding it is a bit of an arse as the stuff has to be mixed with milk

I sterilied loads of little medicine spoons in one of those little dummy sterilser boxes

hand expressed a teaspoon of milk onto the spoon, added the drops of colief, gave it to ds3 then fed on as normsal

popsycal · 23/11/2008 09:46

just to add, our night time screasming has ended but he still grunts from about 4:30 am ish - but it was from 3 so an improvement

also try to do it at every feed
