Yes always!! DD reads to herself now that she is ten, and always has an hour or so of reading every night. I gave her To Kill A Mockingbird last night and we read the first chapter together. Was fun. DS still gets read to/with every night.

I'm a wohm so I love cuddling up with them at the end of the day and reading.

dd has bedtime stories sometimes but rarely on Mondays unless dp does it (We do a see who can answer the most q on Uni challenge instead) and never on Fridays as Gardeners World is on so we cuddle up and watch that instead and shes always asleep by the end of it.

Stories are very important but doesnt have to be at BEDTIME.

Also Why READING? Story telling is skill that for some reason people seem to forget about all together and is entirely different from reading aloud and much more intimate and immediate.

Reading to them is good but most important is them see you reading books, your own books that is, not just their books.

I read to DS in German [preen] I can't actually speak German and don't understand what I'm saying, I'm just making noises really. I learnt the lines from listening to DP reading and DS always wants those books, not something I can read like Calm Down Boris.

DS is currently watching Jeremy Kyle though he turned the TV on himself too

bella29 · 20/11/2008 10:09

Is that Jeremy Kyle in german, then

I'm really not taking the mickey - I am bilingual and I do teach my dc a bit of French.

IwishIwasamermaid · 20/11/2008 10:11

I think its in English.....its hard to tell sometimes

I wasn't trying to make myself sound good, just the opposite, I know how stupid it is, but I'll do anything for an easy life even if it means reading in a language I don't speak or understand!

Am very at you being bilingual

I still read to my two and DS1 is 8 (DS2 is 5). I fully intend to carry on until they throw me and the book out of their bedrooms in the evening.

I do know several people who don't read to their children at 8 though. It seems that as soon as the children can read for themselves the parents don't bother any more which I think is sad. You can read things together that the child may not even think of reading alone.

It is part of our routine, bath, joint story and drink (they have a book which we read to both of them) then off to their bedrooms and they get a book/chapter each in bed, I read to one and DH reads to the other. DS1 reads by himself afterwards, DS2 is asleep as soon as the lamp is off. Lovely.

bella29 · 20/11/2008 10:14

Agree with you niecie - a book shared is lovely.

Fillyjonk · 20/11/2008 10:18

shaun you ae so very right about the story telling being a lost art.

anyway you are all amateurs. Last night I read about 6 stories to dd1, and just over half of the wind in the willows to ds. I am serious, btw. Bedtime reading is big here.
Am serious btw though that was a heavy night as dp was away and kids missed him.

and thus far this morning I have read about 5 biology books to ds and the bear to dd1.

so big ner

sunandmoon · 20/11/2008 10:33

Hourray to Fillyjonk fo reading biology books in the morning

Every night DD (3.4)has 3 stories. It depends who she goes with to her bedroom. Sometimes it is DH so the stories are in English or it is me so the stories are in French! And now she has started reading us stories too which it is quite interesting since she can't read yet!! But she can explain what's happening in the books..
And during the day, she asked to read books and she also reads books to her dollies... I love it

swanriver · 20/11/2008 11:01

We always read to our children and not just at bedtime. Bedtime can be a bit of a bottleneck. DS8 loves his books read aloud, and they often are even better that way. He'll then read the next chapter to himself because he can't wait to hear what happens next. I often make up stories based on children's characters. But not usually at bedtime unless it's a five liner. ie: There once was a little golden button called z. She had two brothers. Their names were x and y. They lived on a beautiful silky jacket but one day she felt off into a puddle. TO BE CONTINUED.

nowwearefour · 20/11/2008 11:49

swan river have you really got 8 sons? or is your son 8?

swanriver · 20/11/2008 11:59

That would make a good bedtime story. 8 sons! Or a musical. No, he's 8.

KatieDD · 20/11/2008 12:19

So nobody just wacks a story CD on and collapses on the sofa with with a cuppa or is that just our house ?
BTW all my kids have reading ages 2 years above where they say they should be including the 4 year old.

bella29 · 20/11/2008 12:30

Now look, KatieDD, don't you go getting competitive on us - you might have to go on the other thread

BTW, this thread prompted me to go & look in 'gifted & talented'. If you haven't been there, don't It's scary .

I had to prise my fingers off the keyboard before I typed something I knew I'd regret, like 'Let your child play'

claireyBANG · 20/11/2008 16:21

Niecie I read that as:

..bath, a joint, a story and a drink

Perhaps it is a sign that I need to practice my reading...

ramonaquimby · 20/11/2008 16:46

sadly this sort of thing is done for the minority of kids who never get books read to them , or perhaps don't even have books in the house so it's done to everyone instead of targetting and getting folks knickers in a twist
