Tonight we had hige trantrums...he said his pull ups were itchy and he wanted to try and go with out them at night - he will be 4 in Feb and each morning wakes wet...never had a dry one. He was out of nappies in the daytime really early - at 2 years.

What should I do?

Let him be without pullups.

Carry him sleeping to the toilet, and sit him down for a wee, with lights off, while you hug him closely so he dont fall off, and carry him back to his bed.

duckyfuzz · 19/11/2008 20:58

lift him for a wee when you go to bed, see how he does, he might surprise you!

DD did the same and that was that. Having never managed more than a night dry, it was then a couple of weeks before she had an accident. Make sure you've got a waterproof mattress protector though!

i'd let him try. maybe he wees early in the morning and will wake if he doesn't have the pull-ups on.
he may well KNOW he is weeing, but he just does it in the pull-ups because he can.

you'll never know till you try.

a top tip though: make up the bed twice.
waterproof sheet and top sheet, then another waterproof sheet and top sheet.

if he wets you just take the first lot off and can pop him straight back in bed.

mummatoone · 19/11/2008 21:01

yes I think I will go and get a cover this week. But dont you think lifting them is just training them to wee at a certain time??

My dd was wearing pull ups in bed til about 3.5. They were ALWAYS wets in the morning. We came back from holiday and i realised we didn't have any left, so I said, OK you're a big girl now, are you happy to have no nappy? Fine - she said. We never looked backed.

Obviously there have been a few accidents, but not that many. I tried waking her up before I went to bed, but that didn't go down very well. We just left the potty in her room.

Now, a year on, she'll still get up and use the potty, but can't remember the last time she wet the bed.....It's almost like having a nappy gives them the licence not to bother....

ummm I think I will get the covers and go for it after the weekend-Im not too sure about the waking to put on toilet though

ds has JUST tonight demanded that he go to bed without pull-ups. He's five so a late trainer but his PJ pants have always been wet in the morning so I've not pushed until now. Wish me luck!

ShyBaby · 19/11/2008 21:17

Give it a try. Dd has been out of nappies for years. If i'd have carried on with the pullups she'd probably have carried on peeing.

She's not had one accident at night. Sometimes in the day when she's too busy playing she forgets, but she's fine at night.

She was two I think when she had her last nappy. We had mattress cover etc but never really needed it.

edam · 20/11/2008 18:28

Success! Ds was so proud of himself this morning.

Hope your ds is doing well too, Mummatoone.

ShyBaby · 21/11/2008 21:46

Applause for your ds

(nerve wracking isnt it, expecting that 3am cover change )

jollyholly · 21/11/2008 21:48

mummatoone, don't worry about lifting, you don't have to do it for long. One day you'll just forget, and they'll either get up themselves or not need one!

edam · 22/11/2008 09:56

thank you Shybaby- he's on a roll now, ANOTHER dry night.

ninja · 22/11/2008 10:02

my dd was never dry at night, did really well at night when she was 3 1/2. we did lift her for a while and then later had a sticker chart - good luck

mummatoone · 22/11/2008 18:59

Havent tried it yet as I really need to get the mattress covers first. Have bene monitoring his drinking over the last few nights and have been giving him his last big drink around 5pm ... he has a sip of water before bed, a big wee before bed and as soon as he wakes I whip his pull ups off and still he's soaking.

The last few nights he has been ok going to bed in pull ups so Im not going to stress - He is only 3.9yrs - I do think it is exceptional if your LO is dry at night before 3/4 dont you?

PS brilliant news btw Edam!!!

I buck the trend of taking the nappy off before they are dry at night.

I think as they wee subconciously at night, it does not really make any difference to remove the nappy.

I also think tht getting them up at night to wee stops the bladder coping when it is full.

Both of the families I know who do this still have boys who wet the bed at 7+ years and are still putting them on the loo.

Ds wasin pull-ups until he was dry for a couple of weeks (took until he was nearly 6) and has only had a coupe of accidents in the last few years.

Dd I did the same but was out of night nappies by about 2 3/4yrs. Nothing done differently, they just matured at different rates.

One tip if you do remove their pull-up is to double layer the sheets for ease of changing at night i.e. waterproof sheet with fitted sheet ontop, then another waterproof sheet with another fitted sheet. This means you cn just remove the top two layers without having to make up the bed.

I also found this which makes sense (if you do get them up to wee at night).
