(a) give up and revisit in a few weeks
(b) carry on for a bit longer
(c) go for the half and half appoach - pants at home and nappies if out and about

Thanks!

I know she could do it, but I'm beginning to lose patience.

(a) unless I felt dd would feel like she'd failed, then I'd do (c).
By no success I take it you mean every wee is in her pants and she isn't telling you before she needs to go?

How old is she?

What do you mean by no success?

PrettyCandles · 19/11/2008 13:58

If there's absolutely no improvement, or the child is getting upset by it, then I would choose (a) - and I have done so. When we tried again nearly a year later, ds trained within two days.

If there's a little improvement, or the child is happy, then it's worth continuing. Perhaps rethinking your strategy - maybe more frequent loo-trips, a different reward system, less fuss, etc.

tassisssss · 19/11/2008 14:01

Yip, no success means all wees and poos are in pants and she's not telling until she's doing it.

She has excellent control though in the sense that there's only an accident every 3-4 hours.

She somethings says "poo coming" or "weewee coming" and goes and sits so I sit and read stories being manically encouraging but after 10 mins nothing's happened.

She was 2 in September.

I'd give up for a few more months. It's good to know she can hold for 3-4 hours when she is ready for it though.

PrettyCandles · 19/11/2008 14:08

Personally, I would call a halt. No fuss, just put her in nappies tomorrow morning. Leave the potty out, let her use it if she fancies. Obviously praise her if she does so, but make no positive attempt to train for a couple of months.

On antoher note, are you sure she's getting enough to drink? Weeing only every 3-4h seems a very long gap. My three were all weeing every 2h at least at 2y.

tassisssss · 19/11/2008 14:09

thanks.

How much is "enough" PC? She has drinks with meals and I usually offer mid am and mid pm but she often doesn't take much.

Mine could hold it almost all day at 2. (Twas v. distressing trying to get her not to and she was distraught if she had an accident). As long as the puddle is big enough and the right colour I wouldn;t worry about dehydration.

SoupDragon · 19/11/2008 14:13

I would give up for a month or so. BabyDragon was clueless at 2.4 but got it in 3 days 2 months later.

SoupDragon · 19/11/2008 14:14

This is one of the few times that pull ups are useful as you can just use them like pants if she says she wants to use the potty. Nappies are a bit of a faff.

PrettyCandles · 19/11/2008 14:18

I think you can only really tell by the colour of the wee. As long as it's colourless or very palely yellow then she's probably drinking enough.

OTOH, 5yo dd's urine is generally pale yellow, and she drinks about 1l of water a day, yet the paediatrician says she should be drinking 1.5l a day. ?

StephanieByng · 19/11/2008 15:12

She doesn't sound ready to me. I'd leave it. And I wouldn't use the half and half approach personally; just revisit it in a few weeks or months.

hannahsaunt · 19/11/2008 20:20

From bitter experience with ds1 to absolute dream 24h scenario with ds2 I would wait until she is practically begging. So much less stressful all round.

Thanks girls!

That link is very funny WW (though don't you just find yourself dying to know what cod said...so sad...).

I've always been very clear that if they don't get it after 3 days you should quit and try again but I can see myself doing the half and half thing. I think I'm far too tight to buy pull-ups though when I'm washing cloth for dd2 anyways...

DD1 was like this, I tried a few times from when she was 2 but then gave up, but left a potty downstairs to be used as seat/toy whatever.
Last week out of nowhere she started stripping off and using it, today we went out with knickers on adn she did a poo in the loo, all on her own instigation. She is now 2.9.
