I am using metanium. Hate hate hate it because it doesn't wash off my hands but it has always worked in the past. Not working anymore it seems and poor ds has a bleeding sore bum and i need to sort it out. Is there anything better? He's teething and has a cold so we are having HUGE fun chez Pillow....

Our 3 week old boy seems to be having nappy rash. Looks very redish with rougher skin and small white heads on the inside of either cheeks. Could this be thrush? We are using ample sudocream and frequent nappy changes but no improvement. Any advise welcome

ItWasSelfDefence · 17/01/2011 22:19

This link will give some pictures of baby bums with thrush to compare your DS to: www.google.co.uk/images?hl=en&biw=800&bih=391&tbs=isch:1&sa=1&q=nappy+thrush&aq=f&aqi=&aql=&oq=

From what ou descrie it sounds like thrush to me, best to go to the GP for a prescription, if its thrush sudocrem won't get rid of it.

OLIVE OIL.

When ds was a baby he had very bad nappy rash at one point. Everynight after his bath we would cover hime in olive oil and leave him to roll around on a towel for as long as possible. Then just before you put the nappy on add a bit of sudocrem or vasoline or bepanthen for extra protection overnight.

What Cargirl said: we used another version called Cavilon with DS' open bleeding sores. This isn't just yer average nappy rash and it won't heal unless it is kept dry and clean, and unfortunately the only way you can do that is with something serious, or permanent nappy-free time (and even then, the sores can't really touch anything or it won't heal properly/cleanly)
If you can't buy it, ask your GP/HV about it.

whisk up an egg white and dab it on then let it dry. It forms a breathable barrier and works for us every time when other things have failed. I was very sceptical when first told about it, but it really does work.

And lots of nappy free time with frequent changes, especially if acid teething wee is involved.

DioneTheDiabolist · 17/01/2011 22:28

Egg white worked brilliantly for me. DS had nappy rash which was so angry and bleeding I actually cried when changing his nappy.

Separate your egg and whisk it a bit so you can apply it better. Keep it in the fridge. Cool egg white is better and brings relief.

Thanks for this thread - poor ds2 has a sore bum atm too. We normally use cloth, and I was worried about him being uber-wet overnight, so put him in a disposable after applying metanium.

Somehow it got stuck to his poor bum cheek Sad I had to literally peel it off in the morning, poor bugger Sad. So now he has a scab on his arse, just like they get when they fall over. I don't really want to put anything on it, but obv he has to wear nappies at some point (he's 14 months). Have kept him in sposies, but no cream. Not sure what else to do. Might try the Sprilon stuff though, thanks.

You will see a difference within 24 hours.

melezka · 17/01/2011 22:32

Egg white was the only thing that worked for my DD.

I'm sorry - it's so distressing, isn't it?

swampster · 17/01/2011 22:42

Lansinoh is the most amazing stuff for sorting out anything anything from nappy rash to cracked lips to my CS scar.

DS1 reacted really badly to Metanium and most of the other stuff. Sudocrem is ok.

NettleTea · 22/01/2011 15:51

are you using fleece liners? My DS used to get sore if he didnt have a stay dry liner. Even at nursery he had a fleece liner with a paper one over the top to catch anything dodgy

taytotayto · 30/01/2011 19:21

if you can find vasogen its a god send . my dd had the same and in one application it worked. my sister in ireland told me about it and i thought she was winding me up as it sounds like a vaginal cream but sure enough it says nappy rash on it. boots used to sell it but like anything that good and cheap they now dont. its gone up alot in price in the last 18 months and i know only small independent chemists now sell it and its also available online. hope your little man is better soon.

MummyElk · 30/01/2011 19:27

another tip i had from MN was to mix metanium with sudocrem - one even suggested squeezing the whole metanium tube into your sudocrem tub and mixing it up..
i didn't quite get that far but the two seemed to do a better job than either did alone....
and, oddly, breastmilk helped my DD2.....Hmm. I know. bizarre.

whatagradeA · 30/01/2011 19:31

The only thing I could get to go on without sliding off when mine were really red raw was e45 nappy cream. It was ghastly and too think any other time but would stay on in a thick slick and therefore let the skin heal.

slummymummy1981 · 02/09/2011 22:14

havent tried egg white will know thanks ladies

bannyfaws · 02/09/2011 22:29

thovaline from the chemist works really well, i remember ds2 having the same nappy rash when he was about 15 months, it was bleeding and red raw and went on for far too long

let him be nappy free for as long as you can bear, and make a pot of camomile tea. when it's cooled right down, soak a muslim cloth in it (cut it down into 4 squares) then wring it out till it's quite dry but still a wee bit damp, fold it up and put it in the nappy overnight - it's cooling and soothing and really helps calm it all down. make sure whatever nappy cream/treatment you've chosen is on his bum before you put his nappy on. He should have a more comfortable bum soon Smile

Monkeybear1 · 16/05/2016 20:48

Any tips for horrific nappy rash. Gets terribly upset and shakes with any nappy change. Skin is broken with open wounds. So far used bepanthen, metanium, washing with cotton wool and water and now have resorted to trying some egg white on there.
Poor little man gets frequent episodes and I don't know why but they last ages and cause a lot of upset.

Ariela · 18/05/2016 21:51

You could try silver nappy liners, if it's bacterial they work really well.
