Homemade Baby Wipes

Just about to cut up some muslins, jay clothes etc to make some baby wipes to use at home.

Can anyone give me a good recipe to soak them in? Do you leave them in the solution all day or just dip them in when needed?

Inspiration please...camolmile tea, essential oils??

Camomile tea with a drop of tea tree oil. That's what I always planned to use but ended up just wetting them under the tap each time.

PrettyCandles · 14/11/2008 21:59

When I did this I used to make a fresh jam-jar every few days, epending on the ingredients.

Standard mix: Camomile tea and a couple of drops of lavender. This I think should keep for a few days, especially in cold weather.

For nappy rash add a good spoonful of honey and a couple of spoonsful of olive oil. This I think better not to keep the jar for longer than a day or two, especially in summertime.

If using olive oil, then shake the jar vigorously and pour a little out into a bowl to use.

These are all great, thanks! Will start tomorrow...she says...

I started out with making a solution, but soon realised it was more trouble than it was worth (in my opinon anwyay! LOL) So for the past year or so I've just been getting my wipes (faceclothes bought for purpose) wet under warm tap with a squirt of baby wash. Got some nice gentle stuff from Lidl before (soap free wash/shampoo with olive oil & oat milk etc, and looks like it's SLS free too). Anyway, not sure it's something they regularly stock, but it's worked well for us. No nappy rashes at all, and my little boy has quite sensitive skin.

I soak them and put them in that pampers dispenser which you get free with Bounty. I can even make them dispense. [sad obsessive emoticon]

I use a squirt of top to toe wash with a dash of baby oil fill tub with hot water, totally soak wipes, ring out, empty excess water - stay damp enough with lid left on tub.

I have a cup of water by the side, change it regularly. Works ok.

Essie, slightly of your dispensing resusables...

RhinestoneCowgirl · 15/11/2008 14:53

I just use warm water too, always thought I should get round to something else, but DS has never really had nappy rash so...

essie - I use the pampers box too

Essie3 · 15/11/2008 17:59

Oh, umlellala, I can reveal my secret! And Rhinestone it's like sticking 2 fingers to the large corporations, using the sloganed box for homemade wipes! (I'm annoyed because apart from having pampers moulded into the plastic, the label doesn't come off either.)

bitofadramaqueen · 17/11/2008 12:30

Essie how do you make them dispense?

Re: recipe - I wasn't too keen on camomile recipes when I tried them although they clearly v popular. I put a big dollop of olive oil (basic stuff), dollop of babywash and a few drops of lavender oil into a tub/ice cream container and then fill it with water until about a quarter full, then put my wipes in. They soak up all the liquid and are really moist. Lasts about two days.

I did use plain old water for a while, but I thought DS's bits would be a bit whiffy by the end of the day!

lollipopmother · 17/11/2008 13:20

I branched out a couple of days ago and used a random fruit teabag I had knocking about, it smelt nice but I thought it was a bit sticky so haven't bothered to use any again.
I use camomile but only because everyone else does!

I'd like my wipes to be a bit more 'moisturising', how would I go about that?

Using baby wash is a good idea but I think it defeats the object a bit as it's chemicals, altho obviously no where near as bad as the alcohol used in wet-wipes, eeek!

bitofadramaqueen · 17/11/2008 17:17

I use the nature babycare stuff to ease my conscience. Perhaps I could give camomile tea another go...

How about a dollop of olive oil lollipop - it's what I use on DS when his skin is a bit dry and it works a treat.

Essie3 · 17/11/2008 20:47

I agree on the chamomile tea - I'm like you Lollipop. It stains though doesn't it?

Here is how you make them dispense. Simple, really!

Essie3 · 17/11/2008 20:48

It's my post towards the bottom of the page.

bitofadramaqueen · 17/11/2008 23:16

Thanks Essie. I think I may have to read it again in the morning though as it was too complicated for me at this time of night!
