Drying reusable nappies without a tumble dryer

I used reusables with DS1 but he was born in April during that really hot summer a couple of years ago, so i was able to dry the nappies outside on the line nearly every day.

DC2 is due in February so it's highly unlikely I'll be able to dry them outside. We are moving to a new house which has no tumble dryer. Will I be able to dry the nappies inside? How long will they take? (totbots bambinos) Will I need to give in and get a tumble dryer?

how many have you got? they'll take a day and a half to dry indoors so if you haven't got loads you might start to run out. you could always buy some quicker drying nappies instead?? at least a few to tide you over. a few pockets with microfibre boosters might come in handy

I dried my Bambinos in the tumble dryer but noticed they started to 'crack' on the inside. I put them on an airer in dd's room and they dryed over night. If you have radiators I would dry them on that.

I dry mine on an airer that hangs on the radiator so no direct heat contact, which I find shortened the life span.

good to know, and how long will it take on that? Will they dry overnight or take the whole next day too?

I may have to buy some more nappies! I reckon I had about 20 last time.

I put mine on one of those overhead ceiling airers, it's brilliant. They dry overnight on that (providing the heating's been on for a bit at some point). I use Bumbles though - I think Bambinos would take a fair bit longer (that's why I went for cotton ones).

witchandchips · 14/11/2008 10:03

Near the radiator they take just over 24 hours to dry. I think the secret is to wash nappies everyday (with other clothes) so that you never have to much to dry at once.

we have prefolds of all sorts of makes..
we don't have a tumbler I can dry 7 on each radiator 3 on the back 4 on the front with just the top bit over lapping. if I put them on the radiators when the boys go to bed they are normally dry after breakfast the next day.

Flamesparrow · 14/11/2008 10:28

I always dried mine over the radiator. It makes em a bit crunchy, and doesn't have as long a lifespan (but still a hell of a lot longer than tumbling iyswim) - there is still loads of life in them and I fully expect them to do at least one more child, more likely two.

If you still have the nappies, wash a couple now and try out airer, radiator etc and see how long it takes, you can then work out how many extra you need to cover the drying time

Flamesparrow · 14/11/2008 10:30

Oh and DS got through about 18 months in cloth, feb baby, no tumble drier, 80% bamboo nappies (I have a lot of diff nappies )

silverfrog · 14/11/2008 10:32

I use MEOS and Sandy's, and hang them over a clothes horse. I probably had about 20, and just about got away with that with dd1 - one day of wear, and two days of varying states of drying iyswim.

More recently I've hung them over our heated towel rail - brilliantly quick to dry, but does shorten the life a bit, due to the heat (hasn't been noticable for my use, though)

oopsacoconut · 14/11/2008 13:37

If I wash mine in the afternoon then they get evening and morning heating and I can put them away the next evening so about 24 hours but I wash them daily with other clothes so I only use 5/6 a day. I have 16 nappies and have yet to run out. THis even dried the bamboozles which are notoriously slow to dry.

fruitstick · 14/11/2008 13:56

that's right they're called bamboozles not bambinos!

how quickly I'd blocked it out!
